'Bridgerton' Season 2 Color Scheme Drops Massive Clues For Season 3

Fans of “Bridgerton” are well-aware that there are many clues to future seasons hidden throughout the show. For example, the bee that was seen in the last shot of season one alluded to the famous bee scene between Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) and Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) in season 2.
Although that bee scene didn’t play out exactly as it did in the books, it still provided fans with a valuable clue to the upcoming season. Earlier this week, fans were shocked when Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, revealed that her character’s relationship with Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) would take center stage in season 3, deviating from the order of the books.
Although the news shocked some fans, there was a valuable visual clue provided in season 2 that hinted at Penelope becoming the primary love interest of season 3.
‘Bridgerton’ Fashion Designer Reveals The Hidden Meaning In Penelope’s Dresses
Each of the character families is often associated with a specific color scheme. For example, the Bridgerton family is usually portrayed in blue. The Featherington family is often portrayed in yellow. Combine blue and yellow, and you get… green, which is exactly the color of the dress that Penelope was wearing in episode 4 of season 2.
Although sometimes a dress is just a dress, no detail is too small on a show where characters wear a different outfit in every single episode. Each dress is designed for a particular purpose, and that was most certainly the case for Penelope’s green dress.
In an interview with PEOPLE’s Kelsie Gibson, costume designer Sofia Canale confessed that Penelope’s green dress was specifically designed to symbolize the merging of the Bridgerton and Featherington family colors.
That’s not the only color that holds importance for fans in future seasons. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the yellow color on Eloise Bridgerton’s (Claudia Jessie) mallet matches the inside of Sir Phillip’s home and the color of his vest. The Netflix period drama is based on the book series by Julia Quinn. Fans of the book series know that Eloise gets involved with Sir Phillip in the book “To Sir Phillip, With Love,” foreshadowing their possible romance.
However, Benedict Bridgerton was supposed to find his love match in Sophia in the third installment of the series, based on the book “An Offer from a Gentleman.” Since the show has decided to take material from the fourth book, “Romancing Mister Bridgerton” instead, it remains to be seen who’s love interest will be the star of season 4.
Nicola Coughlan Talks Being The Star Of ‘Bridgerton’ Season 3
According to Deadline, Nicola Coughlan revealed some big news about season 3 at Netflix’s FYSEE Space’s opening night ATAS panel on Sunday night.
“Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that season 3 is Colin and Penelope’s love story,” Coughlan revealed. “I have kept that secret since two weeks into season 2. This is the first time I am saying it here.”
The following day, Coughlan appeared on E! News Daily Pop to answer questions about her upcoming love scenes. When asked if she was ready for her intimate scenes, the “Derry Girls” actress replied, “I’m gonna have to be!”
She admitted that she thought it was “terrifying” to become the romantic lead for the next season; however, she confessed that she’s “known for a really long time” that Penelope's relationship with Colin would eventually take center stage.
Coughlan said she learned the future of Penelope and Colin's relationship “like two weeks into filming season two, so I had a lot of time to adjust to it.”
But that didn't mean she was ready to let the world know just yet! She said, “But then, [Sunday] night, when they were like, 'The news is coming out. You can talk about it,' I was like, 'I don't want to. I'm too scared.' When I say it out [loud], it makes it real.”
There is still no word as to when season 3 is going to be released on Netflix, but at least fans still have the show's first two seasons to stream in the meantime! Production on season 3 is scheduled to begin this summer in London.
