Even people who know Beyoncé but aren’t die-hard fans of the singer know that the only person whom she has had a long stint with is Jay-Z. However, this doesn’t stop the tabloids from cooking relationship rumors.
Since her rise to fame, she has been alleged to be romantically involved with many people, including Sean Paul, who collaborated with her on “Baby Boy.”
Although no one knew how true this was since neither party had addressed it, fans can finally put their minds at rest as Paul has recently come out to address the matter. Read on for more details on Paul’s take on the issue, including the details on the dating rumor, how the story started, and how it went over with Jay-Z.
Never Hooked Up With Beyoncé
In an interview with Daily Beast, Paul addressed the speculations, shutting down claims that he and the “Al The Single Ladies” crooner ever had a romantic involvement. He called her a beautiful woman, adding that nothing ever happened between them save for “a beautiful song.”
Even though they only performed the song “only three times ever,” the flirty nature of the lyrics made fans think they were dating.
Despite their professional relationship, the hook-up rumors took a turn for the worse and, at a point, almost destroyed their relationship. Matters, however, got to a head after Beyoncé confronted him about the rumors.
“She was pissed and was like, ‘I need to speak to you,'” he claimed. “So, we go back and talk, and she’s like ‘What’s all these rumors about?’ and I’m like ‘Yo, I’m not saying s–t,” and she’s like ‘These rumors f–k with my career. I want you to know that.'”
She also added that the rumors were destroying her relationship with Jay-Z. Paul replied, “So, listen: I met Jay before you, and we were friends, so he and I should talk. If he feels a way about that, then we should talk because it’s not coming from me.”
While the “Get Busy” artist tried to assure Beyoncé that the rumors weren’t coming from him, she eventually had to reduce her communication with him.
“It’s weird,” he added, “maybe it had something to do with her management at the time.”
He Doesn’t Regret Having A Collaboration With Beyoncé
While the relationship eventually went south, Paul admitted that he doesn’t regret having collaborated with Beyoncé. After all, they did a “banging song” together.
He also added that “Baby Boy” was one of his top collaborations, after Busta Rhymes and Rihanna.
“It was a big, fat, sexy song,” he said. “While we were only able to perform three times together, we managed to create a sexy video, sexy song, and a lot of sexy rumors.”
‘Baby Boy’ spent nine weeks on the Billboard chart, propelling Paul into greater fame. It was also attached with a steamy video with over 100 million YouTube views.
Why Didn’t Paul Address The Rumors Sooner?
When asked why he didn’t address the dating allegations sooner, the artist admitted that he wanted to take advantage of the free publicity the rumor provided.
Paul said per MTV News, “I just remained quiet about it for years because it was doing its work. There was just a lot of controversy.”
“She’s an amazing artist. The song was at number 1 for like nine weeks, so that was a very special time for me and for dancehall.”
Beyoncé Reached Out To Paul Following His Breakout Hit

Per MOBO TV in 2014, Paul’s first interaction with Beyoncé was after she opened one of his shows earlier. Following that, she started to attend some of his concerts. After he broke to fame with his 2002 hit, “Gimme The Light,” Beyoncé reached out to him concerning a collaboration, which would eventually become “Baby Boy.”
“She had a few hits with Destiny’s Child, and they would do the Caribbean, but we didn’t really hang out. I’d always admired her music and she’s beautiful. So, when I heard Beyoncé was stepping out on her own and wanted me to do a single, I was like ‘Hell f–king yeah.'”
