Actor Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard continue to make headlines as the trial continues.
The couple is facing each other at the Fairfax County Circuit Court. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a December 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post where she claims that she is a domestic violence survivor. Although she did not mention Depp by name, he claims that he has lost movie roles due to the “clear implication” that he was the “Aquaman” actress’ abuser. Heard is countersuing for $100 million dollars.
Heard began her testimony on Wednesday morning by describing how they met on the set of "The Rum Diary." She then continued on to explain the first time that Depp allegedly struck her. On Thursday morning, she recalled further allegations of abuse, claiming that he kicked her in front of other people on a plane. On Thursday afternoon, she recalled graphic physical and sexual abuse.
The court went on break for a week and resumed the trial on Monday, May 16. In the morning, Heard insisted that she did not leave the fecal matter on the bed. After lunch, Heard testified that she had lost several scenes in "Aquaman 2" due to speaking out against Johnny Depp. On Monday afternoon, Heard was pressed on her domestic abuse claims and became defensive under cross-examination. On Tuesday morning, several of Heard's apologetic "love notes" were read out loud for the court.
Amber Heard Accused Of Not Supporting Johnny Depp In His Sobriety
Amber Heard testified that she once did MDMA with Depp on a plane to Russia and drove him to get mushrooms on another occasion. She also testified that she took mushrooms at her wedding party before the actual wedding took place. Heard also stated that she continued to drink wine, which was met with accusations that she did not support Depp in his sobriety.
Heard admitted to using drugs on "special occasions" including at her 30th birthday party. Heard also stated that she imbibed MDMA and mushrooms at Coachella. Vasquez questioned Heard on the schedule of the party, which Heard insisted changed. The original draft of the studio had "after, dance party and drugs and music" listed after their rehearsal dinner.
In a separate fight, Heard once told Depp to "suck my d---" in a lengthy argument that was filled with insults being flung back and forth. "You're a f---ing kid yourself," Heard can be heard saying in the audio recording. "I wish I hadn't bought into any of the lies you sold."
Depp responds by calling Heard a "spoiled f---ing brat." Heard then calls him a "joke." Depp sarcastically replies, "Yeah, I'm the joke in the industry, Amber." At another point, Depp said that her "jealousy is so tragic."
Amber Heard And The Tweet Vs. Retweet Debate
Later in the trial, there was debate over whether or not Heard was able to edit the title of the article in a tweet she posted containing the link to her op-ed. It still is not clear from listening to the testimony whether she wrote the tweet and attached the link, or if she retweeted the article from another source and added her comments as a quote tweet.
Heard then insisted that she was dropped from several campaigns, including L'Oreal, "The Stand," and "Aquaman 2" due to the online "smear campaign" against her.
On February 7, 2020, one article said #JusticeForJohnnyDepp Trends After Amber Heard Admits Hitting Depp After Audio Clip. On February 3, 2020, another article said, "Amber Heard Admits To Hitting Johnny Depp In Recording."
Heard claims that Depp's lawyer leaked an audiotape, which is how the press got their hands on the recording.
In March 2020, another headline insinuated that Heard slammed a door into Johnny Depp's head. Another headline alleged that she was going to be dropped from "Aquaman 2" due to the "controversy." In May 2020, another HL says that Heard "confessed" to hitting Johnny Depp.
Heard Says She Doesn't Know How Much Time She's In 'Aquaman 2'
Heard claimed that she has been released from her contract with "Aquaman 2" and doesn't know how many scenes feature her when the movie premieres in 2023. She said that it was "difficult to stay in the movie" and claims that she does not know if she will even be shown at all in the final version.
Although Heard claimed that she was a victim of online harassment, on March 26, 2021, Heard tweeted, "Yes Mr. Waldman, I may be wearing makeup on this occasion but on every occasion, you will still be short." The tweet was shown to the jury as evidence that Heard was also engaging in the online vitriol.
An audio recording was then played. Although it's difficult to hear Heard in the tape, she can be heard saying, "Sometimes, I get so mad I lose it."
In another audio recording, Johnny Depp admits to hitting Heard, but it seems to be in response to Heard's instigation.
"I'm sorry I didn't hit you across the face in a proper slap ... but I didn't punch you," Heard said in another audio recording. "I did not punch you. I was hitting you."
"I did start a physical fight," Heard can later be heard admitting, in addition to calling him a "baby."
After asking Heard about an alleged altercation occurring at an airport with her ex-girlfriend, Vasquez concluded her questioning.
