CBS series “The Equalizer” has been picked up for a third and fourth season despite having only garnered slightly above average reviews since it first debuted on the small screen.
The announcement was shared by lead actor and executive producer Queen Latifah, who portrays Robyn McCall, a former CIA officer turned vigilante that utilizes her deadly abilities to wreak her brand of justice on criminals in New York.
While it won’t be surprising that more cast members would be added to a current troupe to spice things up, one Hollywood star that might get to make a possible cameo is Denzel Washington, who starred in the film adaptation of the show.
Latifah is down for a crossover with Washington for “The Equalizer” and has now revealed whether fans would get to see it become a reality.
‘That’s Up To D’
In an interview with Variety, Latifah teased the possibility of Washington making a cameo in her running series “The Equalizer.” The actor starred in Antoine Fuqua’s action thrillers which share the same name as Latifah’s “The Equalizer” show, playing Robert McCall, the male version of the actress’s current character.
In light of the speculations about a crossover, Latifah revealed that the possibility of that happening is solely up to the Hollywood icon whom she greatly reveres.
“That’s up to D. It’s really between him and Antoine [Fuqua]. Obviously, I love him to pieces. I have the greatest amount of respect for him,” she told the news outlet. “What he’s done with the films has been incredible, and I’d be more than happy to connect with him on any level. It’s just kind of like that with us.”
Following the teaser, Latifah’s response would undoubtedly have piqued the interest of fans eager to witness the gender versions of the renowned McCall character team together to combat crime.
‘Who Knows What’s Gonna Happen?’
For the moment, Washington and Latifah remain the lead characters of their respective “The Equalizer” projects and might never get to share the same set either on the film adaptation or the series. Regardless, the actress on her part is ready to deliver if the time comes.
“So, who knows what’s gonna happen? Who knows what could happen, but, I’m looking forward to whatever he’s gonna do because I know when he gets in the zone, it gets in the zone,” she added.
“I’m gonna keep doing TVs Robyn McCall, and let him keep rocking the movie version of McCall; I know we’ll both continue to deliver.”
What’s Next For ‘The Equalizer’
Overall, beyond Latifah and Washington’s choices, the final decision lies in the hands of the showrunners at ABC, who are currently working with the actress on what’s next for the series.
“[We’re] digesting what worked and what didn’t work, and stepping our game up, leveling up for next year, because we’ve got some serious fans who love the show,” Latifah revealed. “We want to make sure that we keep them and build on that audience.”
Understanding the constraints of network television and the sort of information the show can run for the general public is part of what has spurred Latifah to push further in delivering her role as the lead and also one of the showrunners.
Despite the setbacks along the line, the actress feels they have managed to “keep a high level of quality,” though she believes they can always improve in the future.
‘The Equalizer’ Third Movie
In the meantime, even though fans might not get to see Washington in the next season of Latifah’s show, the actor is returning to reprise his role in the third installment of the “The Equalizer” movie, which also sees Antoine Fuqua return as the director.
On January 20, 2022, the third film was officially revealed to be in development, with the principal filming being set to begin later that year. Most of the actors and crew from the previous two films are expected to return, and the narrative will take place in an international setting.
As per the film’s IMDB page, fans will see Washington return to the big screen as Robert McCall when the film debuts in September 2023.
