During his interview, Firth revealed to host Lara Spencer that a third “Mamma Mia” film is still a viable option. He said, “I think it could happen. If you manage to make a second one, I guess you can make a third, a fourth, and a fifth. It was already a miracle.”
Spencer then asked if there was enough material in the storyline to suffice for the third film, and Firth replied that he wasn’t too sure. However, the 61-year-old actor said, “Well, they did it. And if people want it, I would do it just to see my friends again on some beautiful island.”
In reply to Spencer’s question about whether filming the movies was as exciting and fun as watching them. Firth said, “Improbable as it is, yes. Because quite often it looks fun, but it isn’t. We’re actually at work, and it’s hard work to make a thing look fun. Not so much this time.”
The “Kingsman: The Secret Service” actor added,” We weren’t as drunk as we looked, but it was just the sheer joy of this group of people.” So, fans can still hope for yet another iconic “Mamma Mia” movie.
He Credited ABBA For The First Movie’s Success
Firth also spoke about the first “Mamma Mia” movie and its success. He credited the film’s fame and success to the amazing soundtrack, which featured several hit songs from ABBA.
He said, “There’s something about ABBA. Whatever you think of them — whether you liked them back in the day... It links us all anyway because everybody knows it, so I think there’s a magic to that.”
And Firth isn’t lying. The Swedish pop group is one of the most successful and popular music groups of all time. The songs that featured in the 2008 “Mamma Mia” film were already extremely popular, and the title of the movie itself is also the name of a song from the group.
There Might Be A Mamma Mia 3
There is no concrete evidence that there might be a third film, but some of the cast from the previous films have hinted at the possibility. Christine Baranski, the actress who played Tanya in the movies, hinted during an interview on the Today show that she and the cast would happily do another film.
Producer Judy Craymer has also increased fans’ hope with her statements that the Mamma Mia franchise was “meant to be a trilogy” and that Universal studios would likely support the third film.
She talked about the possibility of a third film during an interview with the Daily Mail and hinted that she’s very interested in using new ABBA songs for the soundtrack of a third film if it becomes a reality.
Colin Firth Also Spoke About His New Series
After 25 years, Firth has finally made his return to the small screen through his new series, titled, The Staircase. The series is a true-crime series that explores author Michael Peterson, a man accused of the mysterious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson.
During the interview, Spencer showed a teaser clip from the series, and Firth talked about how his role as Peterson is much different from the movies people associate him with and the kind of roles he’s been offered recently.
When asked about what it feels like to be back in the TV business, Firth said, “This is a new world. I’ve been a little bit out of my depth at times. You know, where am I in this long 8-hour thing. I’ve had to adjust to that.” He also has roles in other films coming up.
