Actor Johnny Depp has been making headlines due to his defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The couple is facing each other at the Fairfax County Circuit Court. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a December 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post where she claims that she is a domestic violence survivor. Although she did not mention Depp by name, he claims that he has lost movie roles due to the “clear implication” that he was the “Aquaman” actress’ abuser.

Rottenborn began on Monday by asking Depp to confirm that abuse can come in many different forms. He played an audio clip between Heard and Depp where it sounds like Heard is telling Depp not to put his cigarettes out on her. Depp can then be heard saying, "Shut up fat a--."

Depp denied throwing a cigarette out on Heard and denied throwing a cigarette at her as well.

Another recording has Heard saying that Depp "beat the s--- out of" her. The rest of the argument discusses the break-up, but Depp does not seem to deny what she said in the video.

In another audio recording, Depp said that he "has to" walk away from Heard in arguments, otherwise, it would be a "bloodbath." Rottenborn continued to play a series of audio clips to paint a picture of a toxic relationship.

In another argument, it sounds like Heard accuses Depp of "taking a swing" at her. In another audio clip, Depp yells, "you're a c---!" at the end of an argument. In a third argument, Depp can be heard shouting and cursing again. This was repeated in a fourth clip as well, where Rottenborn says that Heard told Depp to "get off me." Depp denied hearing that in the recording.

In a text message to his agent, Depp reportedly told him that "she will hit the wall hard!!!!" and "I can only hope that karma kicks in and takes the gift of breath from her," referring to Heard. Rottenborn said that Depp uses the term "she will hit the wall hard" several times in text messages to refer to his ex-wife.

Depp said that the term has "different meanings" in the text messages that he sent. After repeated text messages had sustained objections, Rottenborn finally read a graphic text message from Depp to a security guard. It is unclear what Rottenborn was trying to prove by reading the text message, as he soon segued into a new line of inquiry.

On October 29, 2013, Depp and Heard exchanged text messages about Depp apparently being displeased with Heard accepting a role in a movie. In the text, he mentioned that they had an agreement for her not to be in any meetings or movies. Depp said, "This is not necessarily an angry text; it's just... why do you deviate from our agreement? It's not a matter of films. How do you think she got Aquaman, sir?"

"She is as full of s--- as a Christmas goose," Depp reportedly texted Dr. Kipper after the finger incident. He accused Heard of "hateful" "tirades" against him and mentioned in the text messages that Depp felt that her "ambition" was stronger than her feelings for him.

"I cut the top of my middle finger off," he said in the text. Depp said that it was just the way the text message was worded and it did not mean that he actually cut his own middle finger off.

"The only person I abused in my life is myself," Depp said when asked if anyone else had a problem with his drinking, which had already been discussed in extensive detail on Thursday. Depp took issue with Rottenborn saying that he was "passed out" in a chair during daytime hours.

In another audio clip, Heard confronted Depp about his drug and alcohol use. He then followed it up with a message that Depp wrote to Heard's mother, praising her and saying that Heard has "the strength of a thousand men."

Rottenborn and Depp had a verbal agreement about the number of negative articles that existed about "The Lone Ranger" actor in the press, which resulted in yet another objection.

After a break, Depp said that he was "shocked" and "hurt" after reading the op-ed, which he said was presented to him by a member of his team.

"I just couldn't take it anymore," Depp said of his decision to speak out. He added that a member of his team sent him a magazine article where Shawn Bailey, "the #3 echelon of Disney" said that he was out of "Pirates."

Depp was not sure what magazine the article was published in but said that "Captain Jack Sparrow was a character that I built from the ground up" and said that he had added a lot of himself into the character. Depp said he was treated as "guilty until proven innocent."

Although he had previously said that he wouldn't return to the "Pirates" franchise for $300 million dollars, he indicated on the stand today that he wanted to say "goodbye" to the character of Jack Sparrow, whom he had invested so much time into.

Paul Bettany And Amber Heard 'Despised' Each Other, Depp Said

Depp said that Amber Heard saw Paul Bettany as a threat and was afraid that he would take him away from her. Depp told the jury that it was a "showstopper" if she felt that Depp was paying more attention to Bettany than he was to her.

Depp said Heard's behavior towards Bettany was "quite rude" and "mean" and "loud" during one argument between Bettany and Heard. During this argument, Heard allegedly demeaned an 18-year-old man to the point that he burst into tears, Depp said.

He explained that he used a lot of hyperbole in his text messages with Bettany, especially in terms of his drug use.

"It's hard to understand why someone who is supposed to love you could be that cruel," Depp said of his relationship with Heard, describing himself as a victim of "psychological abuse."

Depp also explained the terminology of the term "monster," which has been brought up several times during the trial.

Depp said that if he engaged in the "back-and-forth" with Heard during arguments, "the monster" was "just the guy who was actually dumb enough to continue to take part in arguments that would ultimately get nowhere."  Depp explained that this is why he would try to remove himself from arguments with Heard. "I would walk away," he told the jury.
