The couple is facing each other at the Fairfax County Circuit Court. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is suing his ex-wife for $50 million over a December 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post where she claims that she is a domestic violence survivor. Although she did not mention Depp by name, he claims that he has lost movie roles due to the “clear implication” that he was the “Aquaman” actress’ abuser.
On Tuesday, April 19, Depp began his testimony, where he talked about the childhood abuse he suffered, his drug addiction, and the overwhelming fame that he experienced following his starring role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
After being questioned by his attorney, Jess Meyers, the “Fantastic Beasts” actor is now being cross-examined by Heard’s lawyer, Ben Rottenborn.
Johnny Depp Is Cross-Examined By Heard’s Lawyer On Wednesday Morning
After asking Depp to revisit his parents’ tumultuous marriage, Rottenborn then directed Depp’s attention to text messages he exchanged with “Wandavision” actor Paul Bettany.
Rottenborn read what he says are text messages sent from Depp to Bettany when Heard was still his girlfriend. Rottenborn said the first text said, “Let’s burn Amber!!!”
Rottenborn said the second text said, “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!!”
Rottenborn said the third text said, “I will f— her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she’s dead.”
Rottenborn Reads Johnny Depp Text Messages For The Jury
On May 30, 2014, Rottenborn read a long text message from Depp to Bettany, where Depp admits to being “f—ed in the head” and seems to admit to excessive drinking and drug use.
In December 2014, Rottenborn read out messages from Depp to Heard, where he says that things have “gone too far” and appears to apologize to her for causing “negative experiences.”
On January 17, 2013, Rottenborn read several texts from Depp that calls Heard an “ugly cow” and a “worthless hooker,” among other things.
On another occasion, his former security guard sent him a text message saying, “You two need happiness” and that it was good to see them getting along. Rottenborn said Depp texted his security guard back, saying, “All I had to do was send the monster away and we’ve been happier than ever.”
In another text, Depp says they are “best friends” after he “locked the monster child away.” He says that he and Heard had been “perfect” for three months.
Rottenborn Questions Johnny Depp About Drug Use
Depp testified that he used cocaine with Marilyn Manson when being questioned about his drug use. Depp also told the jury that he gave Manson – born Brian Warner – a pill when he wouldn’t stop talking.
Rottenborn suggested that Depp employs a lot of people and insinuated that Depp had asked these people to obtain drugs for people. Depp seemed insulted by the comment and said that he did not employ “Yes men.”
At that point, Rottenborn shifted gears and directed Depp’s attention to his testimony in his unsuccessful lawsuit against The Sun. During his previous testimony, Depp answered “at times, yes” when asked if it staff had supplied him with illegal drugs.
Depp was just shown a photo from March 2013, when Rottenborn said Depp had “fallen off the wagon.” Depp said that he had “fallen off the wagon” while filming “The Lone Wagon.” During his questioning, Depp quipped, “Isn’t happy hour anytime?”
They continued to discuss Depp’s drug use until they went on break. When they returned, Rottenborn questioned Depp about his relationship with his sister and her concern for his drug use. In a text message exchange with his sister, Depp admits to “abusing alcohol for sure.”
In an audio recording between Heard and Depp, Heard can be heard saying that Depp vomits in his sleep and that he vomits “a lot.” Rottenborn then asked to show a photo of Depp “passed out” on a black couch. Depp said that the photo was taken while he was in Boston and argued the term “passed out,” saying that he was “sleeping.”
Depp Is Continuously Questioned About His Drug And Alcohol Use
Rottenborn then questioned the “Transcendence” actor on the times that he had “destroyed” hotel rooms. Rottenborn read a text message he said was from Depp, saying, “I got drunk and destroyed my hotel room. There are hookers and animals in here.” In the text message, Depp also states that he killed an animal “for sustenance” and there was blood in the hotel room.
Rottenborn then transitioned into a new line of questioning, saying that there was a woman named Kelly Sue who was being “very affectionate” with Heard at the time she was his girlfriend. Depp said that he did not remember her name and said that he never removed Sue’s hand from Heard.
However, Rottenborn then pulled up testimony from the U.K. trial, where he testified that he did remove Sue’s hand from Heard. During the following argument between Heard and Depp about that incident, Depp admits to breaking a bathroom sconce in the fight.
Rottenborn then circled back to another text message Depp exchanged with Paul Bettany. Rottenborn said that Depp wrote to Bettany, “You may have to drink for me. I, of course, pounded, and displayed ugly colors to Amber on a recent journey.”
Potential Amber Heard Affair With James Franco Gets Brought Up In Court
Rottenborn also brought up that Depp was upset with Amber Heard and believed her to be having an affair with actor James Franco after being upset with certain scenes they were shooting together for a movie. However, the line of questioning is soon dropped as Rottenborn redirected Depp back to the plane flight that was discussed yesterday.
After the plane flight from Boston, Depp sends a long text apology to Heard, where he says, “I will get better for us both.” He added, “I am so sorry, so sorry, I love you and I feel so bad for letting you down.”
After arguing whether or not Depp was “blacked out” on alcohol/drugs for some time, Rottenborn then played a few audio clips for the jury which featured Depp “moaning,” with the comment that it sounded like “an animal in pain.”
In another clip, someone says that they are going to stay with Depp “in case he gets sick.” Yesterday, Depp testified that he had gone to detox in the Bahamas after that flight. However, Depp contested that the recording of the “pain noises” was not from that flight.
Despite testifying yesterday that Heard did not assist him with pain pills when needed during his detox, Rottenborn read a text message from Depp to Heard’s mother, saying, “I couldn’t have made it without her,” and praising Heard’s assistance in his detox.
Rottenborn then brought up the cast insurance form Depp signed for “Pirates 5,” where he checked the box labeled “NO” when asked if he was taking any illegal substances.
Although Rottenborn seemed to suggest that Depp was unsatisfied with his role in the “Pirates” franchise, the judge then call for a lunch break until 2:10 PM ET.
