Julia Roberts Reflects On Romcoms: 'Is This Material Good?'

It's easy to recall the scene in "Pretty Woman" where Julia Roberts' character utters the iconic line, "Big mistake. HUGE!" if you've seen the landmark 1990 romcom.

More than 30 years after "Pretty Woman's" release, Roberts could very well use her legendary line as a measurement example while contemplating whether she should return to her roots and venture back into the world of romcoms.

Sure, romcoms have evolved as a genre in the last three decades, but it almost goes without saying that the romcom genre will always benefit from the return of one of its signature heroines!

Now the real question is, what does the romcom queen of the 1990s think about a possible return?

Before we start fantasizing about watching a hypothetical sequel to "Pretty Woman" and laughing along like Vivian does to an "I Love Lucy" episode, let's pump the breaks a bit.

Fans aren't the only ones thinking about Roberts starring in another romcom. Roberts, herself, has taken time to reflect on the idea, and she has decided to take some sweet time before making any new swoon-worthy tearjerkers.

The actress recently revealed she "Hasn't found anything good enough" to commit to exploring, according to an interview with The New York Times Magazine, as per People.

Roberts' priorities have shifted when it comes to choosing her projects; she has fully embraced making motherhood her full time gig!

She has three children with her husband Daniel Moder, who are now teenagers.

Making sure her family is able to comfortably navigate her schedule plays a giant role in Roberts' decision to choose between projects.

"Here's the thing," she continued, "If I'd thought something was good enough, I would have done it. But I also had three kids in the last 18 years. That raises the bar even more because then it's not only 'is the material good?' It's also the math equation of my husband's work schedule and the kids' school schedule and Summer vacation."

Like Roberts' genre spanning filmography, her work and family life balance has not always looked the same.

While motherhood has always been the center of Roberts' priority list, it has also had to shift over the years so her personal life could successfully work in tandem with her professional endeavors.

"For so much of my children's younger life they would see their dad go off and I would work a little, but they almost didn't notice," she continued in the interview.

Roberts was so present in her kiddos' lives to the point were she would squeeze in work related moments "When they were napping or something!"

Since her children have definitely aged out of scheduled napping periods, Roberts says she feels she has "A sense of responsibility for showing my children I can be creative and that it's meaningful to me..."

Roberts does hope her kids, all of which are on the cusp of adulthood, (Roberts' children Hazel and Phinnaeus are twins), are aware of their mother's presence throughout their childhoods.

She hopes her children understand her choice to be as present as possible because the "Notting Hill" actress does value her career as well.

She wants them to understand her career is "So meaningful that for periods of time I will choose to focus on that almost more than my family, which has been hard for [her] to come to terms with."

Roberts has truly not forgotten the genre of film that has arguably made her famous!

Letting her fans know she still holds romantic comedies in high regard is also incredibly important to Roberts.

"People sometimes misconstrue the amount of time that's gone by that I haven't done a romantic comedy as my not wanting to do one," she revealed.

Good news, romcom devotees! This notion couldn't be further from the truth!

"If I had read something that I thought was that 'Notting Hill' level of writing or 'My Best Friend's Wedding' level of madcap fun, I would do it..."

To borrow a reference from the romcom classic "My Best Friend's Wedding," we'll just have to 'say a little prayer' Julia Roberts will eventually come across the right romcom project that sends her heart a-flutter!
