"Gaslit" focuses on the iconic Watergate crisis's unseen stories and forgotten personalities. It includes a deeper view into Nixon's inept and opportunistic aides, the crazed fanatics who facilitated their crimes, and the whistleblowers who disclosed the entire sordid affair to the public.

More particularly, the series will spotlight Roberts' Martha, the wife of President Nixon's faithful Attorney General, John Mitchell (Sean Penn). Martha was the first to raise the alarm about Nixon's role in Watergate, leading both the Presidency and her personal life to fall apart.

'Gaslit' Is Based On The 'Slow Burn' Podcast

Robbie Pickering developed, and executive produced the series based on the first season of the critically acclaimed "Slow Burn" podcast. Matt Ross, together with Sam Esmail, Roberts, Lisa Gillan, Marisa Yeres Gill, Gabriel Roth, and Josh Levin, also produced the film while The podcast's creator, Leon Neyfakh, consulted on the project.

Although Starz is yet to give the complete list of cast members, they dropped some information about the show's main cast. Already confirmed in the series are Dan Stevens as John Dean, Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean, Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy, and Darby Camp as Marty Mitchell.

Why Robbie Pickering Chose Julia Roberts As Martha Mitchell

Martha was the target of a sexist propaganda campaign after raising her misgivings about Nixon in 1972, and she was purportedly held captive for four days inside a California hotel room.

When it came to choosing the actress that would portray the role, "Gaslit" creator, Robbie Pickering revealed to Vanity Fair that Roberts was his initial pick as she reminded him of ladies he knew during his formative years in a devout evangelical family.

He also commended Penn's acting for its "humanity and warmth" and how it would help aid self-evaluation in the lives of the film's viewers. "I want people to look into these characters and see themselves, and how the propensity to be complicit in things that are morally repugnant or morally dubious is within all of us," Pickering said.
