Sadly, comedian Gilbert Gottfried has passed away.

His family posted a statement to his Instagram account, which read, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness. In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend, and father to his two young children. Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love, the Gottfried family.”

Gilbert Gottfried Shared A Photo With Chris Rock As His Final Social Media Post

On March 28, one day after the infamous Oscars slap, the legendary comedian took to Twitter to ask, "Which is the worst crime? Chris Rock being physically assaulted or Chris Rock telling a joke?"

Fans immediately tuned in with a variety of responses.

“So if Amy Schumer told that joke and Will Smith reacted that way are we having the same debate about what to do?” one fan asked.

“Well, I heard the joke, and I'mma say Chris committed the bigger crime: he told a joke that hurt someone AND wasn't funny. It was a c--- joke. I mean, you catch s--- for your ‘too soon’ jokes, but YOURS are f---ing HILARIOUS. You don't get away with this unless the joke is funny,” another commented.

“Only an actor that trusts his scene partner 100% can stand with his hands behind his back after making a sensitive joke about another man’s wife and take a stage slap from a man 4” taller than himself. Chris KNEW he was absolutely safe,” said another.

“Chris rock has to make a 30 min special called, What I shoulda said, and just make nothing but Jada and will jokes for the entire special,” another offered.

“That was a despicable moment. And it seems I'm part of the maybe 15% that support Rock completely and recognize how f'd up that was,” said another.

“He's a Comedian. You expect jokes,” another commented. “He pointed out her short hair in a pretty non-insulting way. Even WILL laughed. I would guess Chris didn't know about the medical condition. Will should have handled that in a way more mature and controlled less violent manner.”

“As soon as everyone started talking about what jokes are acceptable and what jokes aren’t. My mind immediately went to you @RealGilbert,” said another.

Reporter Dave Itzkoff tweeted, "Years ago, Gilbert Gottfried let me visit him at home in NYC. In person he was an unexpectedly gentle guy who loved old showbiz and movie monsters - almost too shy to sit at a table and listen to his wife tell me the story of how they first met. #rip."
