Although they seemed to have resolved their differences in 2010, by 2013, their relationship had again turned rocky. Tish filed for divorce in June of that year, saying at the time that “this is a personal matter and we are working to find a resolution that is in the best interest of our family. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

The couple later said that they were working on their relationship in couples therapy to try to resolve some of their differences.

In a joint statement in 2013, they said, “We both woke up and realized we love each other and decided we want to stay together. We both went into couples therapy something we haven't done in 22 years of being together, and it's brought us closer together and really opened up our communication in amazing ways.”

Three years later, in 2016, Billy Ray Cyrus told PEOPLE that they were committed to taking their marriage “one step at a time,” adding, “It's like everything in life. You take it one step at a time. One day at a time. I think one of the most important things in life and in a relationship is, you make adjustments.”

When the couple filed for divorce in 2010, one source revealed that “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus would not take sides between her parents.

“Miley is not taking any sides on this,” the source said. “She has been upset recently. She’s trying to keep everything private while her family works through this.”

In the October 2010 court papers, her father had written, “As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family. We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers.”

Of course, the “Party in the U.S.A.” singer has had her own difficulties with divorce. She famously dated and eventually married “The Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth in 2018. However, they couldn’t make their relationship work, and the two were officially divorced by 2020. The “Independence Day: Resurgence” actor has since moved on with model Gabriella Brooks.
