It wouldn't be a night full of stars without a dash of drama thrown in!
Last night's Oscars was one for the ages.
The ceremony went on without a hitch until Chris Rock made a joke about his long-time friend Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith in his monologue, and let's just say Smith did not receive it well.
Smith walked on stage after noticing his wife's discomfort and hit Rock in the face before quickly returning to his seat.
Collective disbelief was felt both by Rock and the entire audience in the moments following, with Smith later taking the opportunity to explain himself during his acceptance speech after winning an Oscar for Best Actor.
Nick Viall Weighs In
Reactions to the incident and Smith's actions quickly began pouring in on social media by celebrities and fans alike.
One celeb who knows a thing or two about witnessing shocking moments in real time, and is also incredibly familiar with analyzing relationships through his podcast, had an extremely telling reaction!
Former 'Bachelor' Nick Viall explained the incident was "Way more dramatic" than any moment ever featured in Bachelor Nation.
Viall told Us Weekly while attending the viewing party for Elton John's AIDS Foundation, "I think most people just wondered if it was like a bit or a joke, if it was fake. I think pretty quickly we realized it was serious."
A Joke Gone Wrong
Smith was not finished departing the stage.
The eventual Best Actor winner continued to express himself through an expletive-filled reaction, which, although censored in some parts of the world, was broadcast uncensored in other countries.
Smith yelled "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth," to which Rock responded, "Wow, dude. It was a 'G.I. Jane' joke."
After Smith repeated himself, a visibly shocked Rock said "I'm going to," as per NowThis News.
The tense moment was capped off by Rock concluding "That was the greatest night in the history of television."
Viall added, "Chris Rock was there to be a comedian. He tells jokes, obviously, you know, there 's always going to be some at the expense of people... Everyone has a right to feel though how they feel, and we have our hurt feelings, but how we handle our hurt feelings matters."
Sensing the shock around his actions, Smith apologized during his Best Actor acceptance speech.
Smith said, "In this time of my life... in this moment... I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world..."
He went on to speak about how he felt it was important to "protect" several of his castmates on "King Richard" after beginning his speech by saying "Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family."
Smith later tearfully added, "I am being called on in my life to love people and to protect people, and to be a river to my people..."
In his comments about Smith, Viall also voiced concern that the public may remember Smith's actions during the ceremony over his performance in "King Richard."
Viall concluded, "I feel like [the slap] took away from his moment. I feel like more people are going to be talking about that than his award, and that's unfortunate for everyone."
