Celebrities React To Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock At The 2022 Oscars
By Rima Pundir on March 28, 2022 at 8:00 AM EDT
The Oscars are always a buzzy place. Things that happen on the international stage or the red carpet are forever frozen as the best and worst memories of the Academy Awards. But for the Academy Awards 2022, the eternal moment is Will Smith slapping Chris Rock after the latter joked about Jada Pinkett-Smith's baldness. Of course, soon after, Will Smith got his Oscar for "King Richard and gave a teary speech, apologizing for the incident, without mentioning Chris Rock.
Since then, social media has been abuzz with people taking sides, some standing with Will Smith and the other feeling that Chris Rock was definitely the bigger man here.
While the memes fly on Twitter, we have some celebrity reactions in, although most were as shocked as the global audience watching the show from their homes, wondering if this was scripted, if unnecessary script...
Will Smith Take No 'Smack-Talk' Against Wife Jada
There were plenty of memes, targeting Will Smith for his needless show of aggression, but when it comes to celebs, Smith has one loyal fan.
50 Cent, for one, seems to be having the time of life, posting every meme he can find where Will Smith is the hero and Chris Rock is the guy deserving the drubbing.
Here's what he posted:

DaBaby also seemed to be loving all the anti-Chris memes...
Meanwhile, Trevor Noah seemed rather shocked to discover that the slap was all too real...
Wtaf????? That wasnβt scripted????? π³π³π³π³π³π³π³π³

Plenty Of Dissenting Voices Against Will Smith
Most do not condone the kind of violence exhibited by Will Smith, and perhaps the clearest and most direct statement came from director Judd Apatow. He said, "He could have killed him. Thatβs pure out-of-control rage and violence. Theyβve heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades. They are not freshmen in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind.β
Meanwhile, Kathy Griffin also cammed out Will Smith...
Let me tell you something, itβs a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a Comedian.
Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith in comedy clubs and theaters.β Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) March 28, 2022
One Twitter user had the perfect reply to Griffin.
OK, this is about the tenth time I've tweeted this:
A joke is legal.
Assault is illegal. Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock. That is illegal.
Anyone else probably would have been taken out in cuffs by now.β Lynda Nairn π·π»πΊπ¦ (@JerseyLynda) March 28, 2022
Clearly, this overshadowed Warren Beatty's gaffe when he wrongly announced the best film Oscar in 2017, and his daughter tweeted, rather cheekily...
yes this is more unhinged than my dads moment, no debate

It seemed Cher seemed to miss out on all the action...
WENT OUT OF RM
& MISSED REASON FOR
WILLβS PUNCH..JUST SAW IT, BUT STILL NOT SURE
WHY.β Cher (@cher) March 28, 2022
And here's yet another meme, because, heck, why not?

Mark Hamill also did not think the force was with Will Smith, considering he's the king of sarcasm.
Stand-up comics are very adept at handling hecklers.
Violent physical assault... not so much.#UgliestOscarMoment_Ever pic.twitter.com/enUimEoLV6β Mark Hamill (@MarkHamill) March 28, 2022
Most Celebs Agreed, It Was Rather Unpleasant
Jimmy Kimmel would rather put the spotlight where it's deserved, not even mentioning the actors involved.
I know the big story is the slap, but congratulations to @amyschumer @iamwandasykes & Regina Hall who were very funny - I hope that isn't overshadowed by the unpleasantness #Oscars
β Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel) March 28, 2022
On the other hand, Sophia Bush condemned the act but also dissed the joke that caused it.
Violence isnβt ok. Assault is never the answer. Also? This is the 2nd time that Chris has made fun of Jada on the #Oscars stage, & tonight he went after her alopecia. Punching down at someoneβs auto-immune disease is wrong. Doing so on purpose is cruel. They both need a breather.

Conan O'Brien couldn't resist a joke:
Just saw the Will Smith slap. Anyone have a late night show I can borrow just for tomorrow?
β Conan O'Brien (@ConanOBrien) March 28, 2022
Rob Reiner, however, feels that Will Smith owes Chris Rock an apology.
Will Smith owes Chris Rock a huge apology. There is no excuse for what he did. Heβs lucky Chris is not filing assault charges. The excuses he made tonight were bullshit.

But we have to admit, Maria Shriver said it perfectly.
#WillSmith says he wants to be a vessel for love. Love is not violent. Love is not what was displayed on a global stage tonight. #Oscars
