Sydney Sweeney has had a wonderful year, both on and off-screen. She has successfully peaked trends whenever and wherever possible with roles in HBO's 'White Lotus', and 'Euphoria.' She has also had roles in Amazon's 'The Voyeurs' and Blumhouse's 'Nocturne'. The latest development in Sony's new Marvel movie 'Madame Web' has taken a very interesting turn. Along with Dakota Johnson, fans will also be able to see Sydney Sweeney added to the list of Marvel characters.
How Did Sydney Sweeney Land A Marvel Movie?
Sydney Sweeney was majorly responsible for 'Euphoria's success, as it was the second most viewed HBO show after 'Game of Thrones.' Since then, Sweeney has been weighing many options. 'Madame Web' is special in a way. It will be the first female-centric superhero movie. This will be one of those Spider-Man spin-offs which feature special Marvel characters like Venom, Morbius, etc. This is the first time that a female character (Madame Web) would be headlining a superhero movie.
Dakota Johnson has already been announced to play the lead. It is tough to say where Sydney Sweeney would fit in the scenario, as no plot details have been revealed yet. The only details are that which come from the comics. Madame Web is an old lady. She is like the lady 'Doctor Strange' of Marvel characters. Madame Web lives with an untreatable disease called Myasthenia Gravis. Her only hope is the life-support system on which she dwells. As it is clear, she cannot walk or punch or kill, but she has the power of clairvoyance. Oh! And she is blind too. So, no fighting villains for her. But, through her powers, she helps Spider-Man and Spider-Woman. Anyway, the plot details haven't been revealed and this Madame Web character can turn into something else too.
Dakota Johnson came under a lot of fire after her casting as a disabled person. Fans were furious at the fact that Dakota was going to recreate a disability through her acting, while, in reality, disabled actresses exist and can be cast. But as the plot hasn't been confirmed yet, nobody can say authoritatively that Madame Web will be disabled. Maybe Sony's planning a backstory (and they should if they want to keep away from social media controversies). With the addition of Sydney Sweeney, it becomes much harder to guess the plot.
What's In Common Between Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney?
Talking about the casting, both Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney are famous for playing hot leads in psychosexual Gen Z movies. Dakota Johnson's 'Fifty Shades of Grey' and Sydney Sweeney's 'Euphoria' or 'The Voyeurs' have made special dominant places in the minds of their fans. It would be interesting to see two independent actresses take on the male-dominant Marvel world.
Sydney Sweeney is very particular about the way she is portraying her and her character on-screen. She is also very particular about her nudity. Euphoria has had a profound effect on the audiences, especially in the way it is filmed. The new age drama has had many frontal nude scenes of Sweeney, but she has also controlled the narrative. In an interview with The Independent, Sweeney talked about her process of having a discussion about nudity on the sets with her director:
'There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ He was like, ‘Okay, we don’t need it.’ I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.” It was transformed, however, into a number of blogs with variations on the headline: Sydney Sweeney Asked to Cut Unnecessary Nude Scenes From Euphoria'

On the frontal nudity shown in 'Euphoria', Sydney Sweeney has an intellectual and valid take:
'It was more how respectful Sam is and how incredible of a director he is, that he would never make me do something I didn’t feel comfortable with.
In the scenes between her and Cassie, Sydney says: 'I think it’s important to the storyline and the character. There’s a purpose to what that character is going through. That’s the character. We all get naked in real life. We show this character’s life and what they’re going through. Cassie’s body is a different form of communication for her.'
So, overall, Sydney Sweeney is both, an enigma and an activist. Her portrayals are bold, regardless of the fact that she is acting in front of the camera or preparing behind the camera. That is why it would be fun to see her addendum in the new Marvel movie 'Madame Web'. 'Madame Web' will be written by the writers of 'Morbius', Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. S.J.Clarkson is on board as the director. There are no dates as to when the shoot will start, or when the movie might release.
