Actress ArianaDeBose just made her first appearance as host of “Saturday Night Live” last night.
During her monologue, she introduced herself by saying that she won the Golden Globe for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s film adaption “West Side Story,” which hit theaters late last year.
“Now, not many people know this, but ‘West Side Story’ is actually based on another classic tale of star-crossed lovers,” she began. “90 Day Fiancé.”
She said it was good to be there to represent the Latino community, but also the Broadway community.
“Obviously, Broadway has been through a lot these past couple of years, but we are a community that perseveres,” she said. “I believe Broadway changes lives. I mean, hey, it changed mine, and Broadway has this magical ability to bring people together.”
“And I think we can all use a little Broadway right now,” she continued. “Maybe… maybe a little something from ‘West Side Story’?”
Thus Enters Kate McKinnon!
After DeBose made that suggestion, comedian Kate McKinnon immediately burst onto the stage.
“Did I hear, ‘Sing songs from West Side Story with Kate McKinnon?’” she asked.
“Uh, no,” DeBose replied. “But hi, Kate.”
“I’m sorry. It’s just, it’s my favorite show,” McKinnon said. “I’ve loved it since I was in elementary school.”
“Oh,” DeBose said. “Well, did you like the movie?”
“I didn’t see it,” McKinnon says with a deadpan expression. “I don’t leave the house because of COVID, and also because I don’t leave the house.”
“Well, in that case, why don’t we bring out some stools and we can sing together?” DeBose asked.
“Oh no,” McKinnon began. “I don’t even know if I even remember the songs… ‘Tonight’ in A-flat, thanks.”
Together, the duo performed parts of the songs “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Something’s Coming,” and “America.”
After the first song, DeBose said, “That was pretty good, Kate.”
“Yeah, I know,” McKinnon replied. “I’ve been on Broadway.”
“You have?” DeBose asked.
“Yeah,” McKinnon replied. “Like, the sidewalk.”
“That was pretty good, Kate,” DeBose said, early on in their performance.
