'I Stand With Harrison Ford' Starts Trending After Bob Saget Passes Away

In October 2020, Harrison Ford made an empowering speech on climate change. Ford, the vice-chairman of the Conversation International environmental nonprofit’s board, released a short film warning of the dangers of the climate crisis.

“The climate crisis is real—the weight of scientific evidence is overwhelming…but evidence can be ignored, it can be manipulated,” he said. “Leaders who choose to make climate change a divisive issue do it to protect the entrenched economic interests who profit from behavior that destroys our planet. It’s selfish. It’s short-sighted. It needs to stop…This is— is going to kill us.”

“The necessary foundation of our lives is a vital healthy natural world—our source of clean water, food, and a stable climate,” he continued. “We’re watching that foundation crumble.”

“We have people in leadership positions who refuse to accept objective science,” he added. “They’re robbing us of the ability to collaborate, to compromise, to move forward.”

In 2019, Ford also warned leaders not to deny climate change at the 2019 World Government Summit in Dubai, saying, “Around the world, elements of leadership, including in my own country, to preserve their stake in the status quo, deny or denigrate science. They are on the wrong side of history.”

At 2019’s Global Climate Action Summit, Ford gave an impassioned speech about the necessity to take climate change seriously. On Monday, January 10, a 3-minute clip of Ford passionately warning individuals to “stop giving power to people who don’t believe in science” went viral and started trending.

“Stop, for God’s sake, the denigration of science,” Ford thunders behind the podium. “Stop giving power to people who don’t believe in science, or worse than that, pretend they don’t believe in science for their own self-interest.”

“They know who they are. We know who they are,” Ford continued. “We are all, rich or poor, powerful or powerless – we will all suffer the effects of climate change and ecosystem destruction. And we are facing what is quickly becoming the greatest moral crisis of our time. That those least responsible will bear the greatest cost.”

“So never forget who you are fighting for,” he added. “It’s the fisherman in Columbia, the fishermen in Somalia, who wonders where their next catch is coming from and wonders why the government can’t protect them. It’s the mother in the Philippines who is worried that the next big storm is gonna rip her infant out of her arms.”

“It’s the people right here in California, people on the East coast, people in California who are fleeing from unprecedented fires,” he continued. “People on the East Coast are facing the worst storms in recorded history. It’s our own country, our own community, our own families. I beg of you, don’t forget nature because today, the destruction of nature accounts for more global emissions than all the cars and the trucks in the world. We can put solar panels on every house, we can turn every car into an electric vehicle, but as long as Sumatra burns, we will have failed.”

“So long as the Amazon’s great forests are slashed and burned, so long as the protected lands of tribal people, Indigenous people, are allowed to be encroached upon, our climate goals will remain out of reach and we will be s--- out of time.”

“This is the core truth,” he continued. “If we are to survive on this planet, the only home any of us will ever know, for our climate, for our security, for our future, we need nature now more than ever. Nature doesn’t need people. People need nature.”

He concluded, “So let’s – let’s turn off our phones, roll up our sleeves, and let’s kick this monster’s a--.”

Many fans retweeted the clip, adding, “I stand with Harrison Ford.” Other fans were just grateful that the 79-year-old actor had not passed away. Many beloved actors, including Betty White and Sidney Poitier, passed away earlier this week.

“Full House” star Bob Saget, unfortunately, passed away last night. He was only 65.
