The traditional award ceremony for excellent film work has been in existence for more than eight decades. Although Hollywood has many award ceremonies, the Golden Globe stands out as one of the most revered pieces of accolade any actor can ever receive.

This year's edition will be done privately, partly due to the continuous increase in COVID-19 cases and because the showrunners reportedly did not find a broadcast partner. Luckily, they have promised to give real-time updates on winners on the Golden Globes website and our social media.

Dune Received Nominations For The Two Best Motion Picture Categories

Following the tragic pandemic of 2020, many film giants had to adjust the release dates of their films. Some opted to release their movies via paid streaming services, while others chose to wait for the government to ease the COVID-19 restrictions.

Unsurprisingly, only a few nominated films did well at the box office since several movie lovers avoided going to the cinemas. "Belfast and "Licorice Pizza" barely garnered $7 million thus far while King Richard brought in $27 million worldwide in theaters, despite its additional release on HBO Max.

However, topping the list is Steven Spielberg's West Side Story which grossed $49 million but still falls short of "Dune's" $396 million worldwide profit.

The Golden Globes Acknowledges A Wider Range Of Categories Than The Oscars

Unlike other award ceremonies, the Golden Globe recognizes a broader range of categories. It contrasts with the Oscars, which stuck to awarding just films rather than creating categories like Best Television Series – Drama, Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and other roles to honor the cast and crew of television works.

As a result of this novel approach, crime dramas, sitcoms, and other series with excellent content can now earn their due acknowledgment in the industry.

By this, fans can expect to see a couple of their favorite tv series and actors sweep home some awards when the show holds.

The Ratings Of The Golden Globes Has Dropped

In the past few years, the Golden was competing earnestly with the Oscars as the foremost awards ceremony in Hollywood due to its increased award categories. However, considering their recent diversity and ethics scandals, many celebrities and sponsors have slammed the ceremony's host - with a few even returning the awards in the past.

Last year, ratings dropped for the Globes, from 18 million to just 6.9 million viewers - the lowest in a long time. As per the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, hosts of the awards, they are working to take the show back to its lofty heights.

"Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right," said HFPA president Helen Hoehne via The Hollywood Reporter.
