One of the most popular series in 2021 was All Creatures Great and Small, a series about the heartwarming adventures of James Herriot, a Scottish veterinarian hired to work under the eccentric Siegfried Farnon at the Skeldale House veterinary practice.

After the highly successful season one release, fans began to clamor for the confirmation of season two and subsequent seasons of the drama series. Finally, the release date for season two was announced. 

Now, Masterpiece PBS has confirmed the renewal of All Creatures Great and Small for a third and fourth season, and fans love it. Read more to find out all the information that the showrunners have released about the show’s future.

Season Two Premieres January 9th

Season Two of All Creatures Great and Small is set to premiere on January 9th, and many fans of the series are super excited about the return of their favorite vet. Season two is set in 1938, the year before World War II.

The second season is slated to have six episodes and an additional Christmas special episode. Most of the cast from season one will be returning in the new season, including Callum Woodhouse, Samuel West, Rachel Shenton, Anna Madeley, and Matthew Lewis. 

Regarding the role of the eccentric Mrs. Pumphrey, who was previously played by the Late Diana Rigg, who unfortunately passed away in September last year, producers chose to cast actress Patricia Hodge to play the role, and fans will meet her in the new season.

Season 3 And 4 Will Have Seven Episodes Each

Channel 5 also recently announced that they had renewed the series for seasons three and four. Each season will have six episodes each and a Christmas special episode, making a total of seven episodes.

Location shooting for season three will begin in Yorkshire in Spring 2022, and according to producers, it is likely to air this year, so fans are estimating a release date towards the end of the year.

A press statement by Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Director of Programmes at ViacomCBS Networks UK, said, “It is clear that our viewers adore James Herriot’s adventures in Darrowby and so do we at Channel 5. I am looking forward to us all being reunited with the Skeldale House family when series three arrives on our screens this year.”

The official synopsis released by the broadcaster reads, “As series three returns, we will rejoin our beloved Skeldale House family in the Spring of 1939 as the prospect of another World War looms large over the Dales. Change is afoot for all our Darrowby residents, especially James and Helen, who are embarking on the next chapter of their lives as the wider world around them heads toward a period of great uncertainty.”

Herriot And Helen’s Wedding Will Be In Season Three

According to statements by actors from the series and hints by producers, fans believe that season three will feature the highly anticipated wedding of Herriot and Helen, the local farmer’s daughter he is in love with. 

In an exclusive interview with RadioTimes, Callum Woodhouse, the actor for the role of Tristan in the series, said Herriot and Helen’s wedding would happen in season three. He said, “I quite like the idea that it’s not straight into the wedding. It’d be quite nice for that to be, you know – if we are lucky enough to get a series three, then that’s going to be one of the things that happen.”

The Real Author’s Children Released A Statement

All Creatures Great and Small is based on the real memoirs of James Herriot, whose real name is James Alfred Wright. He was a British veterinary surgeon and author, and the stories of his life have lived on years after his death.

His children, Jim Wight, and Rosie Page, manage their father’s legacy, and they released a joint statement on the confirmation of seasons three and four of All Creatures Great and Small. In the statement, they said, “For many years, the books of James Herriot have provided a source of comfort to tens of thousands of people worldwide at difficult times in their lives.”

They continued, “With this recent adaptation of his books, a new generation has been introduced to the joys of the Herriot stories. We are delighted that there are to be at least two more series of All Creatures Great and Small, and we are especially pleased that the same excellent actors and producers are to be involved.”
