“Look, I personally don’t care anymore. I have three Grammys, which mean nothing to me now, obviously,” began the “Save Your Tears” singer. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, I want the Grammy!’ It’s just that this happened, and I’m down to get in front of the fire, as long as it never happens again. I suck at giving speeches anyways. Forget awards shows.”
The Weeknd Vs The Grammy Awards
The 30-year-old came off a little salty when he received no Grammy award nominations this year for his album “After Hours” which has been critically acclaimed and features hits like “Blinded By The Lights” which even has its own Tik Tok dance.
In previous years, the performer has taken home Grammy’s for R&B Performance and Urban Contemporary Album in 2016 and 2018. However, he couldn’t help but feel like he was snubbed this year describing the situation as “an attack”.
Thought It Was A Sure Bet
The Weeknd elaborated on why he felt so strongly,“I use a sucker punch as an analogy, because it just kind of hit me out of nowhere, I definitely felt … things. I don’t know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion. I just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’ We did everything right, I think.”
the musician acknowledged how it comes off, him complaining about not being nominated. “I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I was going to get nominated. The world told me, like, ‘This is it; this is your year.’ We were all very confused.”
Everyone Was Shocked
To further elaborate his shock the singer also shared that people who he hadn’t seen or heard from in years were reaching out.
“People I haven’t spoken to in ages, the entire music community, all my peers,” he stressed.
This is what prompted the singer to wonder if the popular music academy has an issue with race. “If you were like, ‘Do you think the Grammys are racist?’ I think the only real answer is that in the last 61 years of the GRAMMYs, only 10 Black artists have won album of the year.”
Bigger Things To Come
While he acknowledged that he isn’t trying to stir the pot he has to think long and hard about what is going on in front of his eyes.
“I don’t want to make this about me. That’s just a fact,” he continued.
Regardless, The Weeknd has bigger things to focus on now like his upcoming Superbowl performance.
“We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl.” That performance is scheduled for February 7.
