'Gossip Girl' creator Josh Schwartz has filed for divorce from his wife, Jill Schwartz, after 13 years of marriage.
According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, the popular television producer filed for dissolution of marriage in the Los Angeles County Courts on December 28, 2021. Schwartz is well known for creating the television hit 'The O.C.' along with developing 'Gossip Girl.'
In the filing, Schwartz is asking for joint custody of his two daughters, and claims "irreconcilable differences" are the reason for the split. Interestingly, Schwartz is asking a judge to validate a "post-nuptial agreement" signed by the parties back in 2016. It's unclear what prompted the TV producer to sign a legal document of this type after years of marriage, but it most likely outlines the split of their money and property.
'Gossip Girl' Creator Claims He Signed A 'Post-Nuptial' Agreement Prior To Split
The 'Gossip Girl' creator is reportedly worth $70 Million.
"The true nature and extent of the parties' separate property and debts is unknown to (Josh) at this time. He requests leave of Court to amend this petition when same is ascertained. [He] requests the court confirm the validity of the Post-Nuptial Agreement signed October 19, 2016," the divorce reads.
According to the documents, Schwartz married Jill Stonerock in 2008. The hook-up was a true Hollywood story after he reportedly overheard 'O.C' star Rachel Bilson trying to hook up her BFF (Jill) with lead actor Ben McKenzie. "I said, 'What about me?' Ben doesn't need help," Schwartz told InStyle. Three years later, Schwartz reportedly proposed to Stonebrook with a plastic ring after someone broke into his car and stole his engagement ring. Of course, Bilson was the maid of honor at their wedding and is the Godmother of their daughters.

Schwartz's story is amazing, considering he was one of the youngest people in network history to create and run a series when he did 'The O.C.' Back in 1995, Schwartz attended film school at the University of Southern California whereas a fraternity president he was exposed to what it's like behind the gates of the rich and famous, which would later provide guidance in the pilot for the 'O.C.'
In the documents, the 'Gossip Girl' creator is asking the court to terminate it's ability to award spousal or child support based on the postnup. He is requesting a "statement of decision with any and all factual findings upon which the determination of any issue was made including, but not limited to child custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, property valuation, property division, tax consequences, and attorney's fees."
Josh Schwartz Tapped To Develop Television Version Of 'Sweet Valley High' Books
Interestingly, the date of separation is listed at "TBD" which is important considering anything after that day could be considered sole and separate property. This is crucial considering it was announced Schwartz was a part of a huge new deal to develop a television version of the 'Sweet Valley High' books. According to reports, Josh and producing partner Stephanie Savage are joining together to head up the project called, 'Sweet Valley.'
Again, at this point, it's unclear what caused the former couple's split -- and Jill has yet to respond to the divorce filing.
