Prince and Stevie Nicks Disagreed Over A Scene From 'Purple Rain'

The music industry has had many stars who created timeless music and secured their spot as the best of their generation. Arguably, Prince and Stevie Nicks are among the famous artists in this category.

Nicks is renowned for her unique voice and poetic lyrics, while Prince, now deceased, was an all-rounder who sampled his far-reaching falsetto on different genres. They broke musical records and debuted several award-winning albums.

The pair shared a strange friendship but inspired each other and attended their respective events to show support. Sadly, Nicks and Prince never shared the same stage but collaborated away from the spotlight. On one occasion, they fell out due to the female star's distaste for her colleague's feature in the musical drama "Purple Rain."

In the late nineties, Prince had already made a name for himself as a singing maestro. Like most singers, he desired to delve into the acting industry, debuting in "Purple Rain." The musical drama encompassed scenes from Prince's concerts and featured his band, Apollonia Kotero, and many others.

It garnered several critical acclaims and grossed over $72 million worldwide against its $7.2 million budget. Despite the positive response it generally received, Nicks did not enjoy the film and reacted in an uncomfortable manner which watching a scene during its premiere.

The scene featured Prince's character slapping Kotera, and Nicks "freaked out" at the violence. Almost immediately, she took off to the bathroom to calm herself and did not return for the rest of the film. Prince subsequently noticed her absence and inquired why she left the theater at the end.

Nicks then disclosed the reason, but her words changed Prince's demeanor, who felt hurt by her response. Afterward, the pair did not speak to each other for a while.

After some time, Nicks and Prince ended the silent feud they had going on. Still, they never climbed a concert stage together despite collaborating on different songs, particularly "Stand Back," off "The Wild Heart" album.

The chart-topping song referenced Prince's "Little Red Corvette." To date, Nicks regrets a joint performance of the song did not occur.

"The saddest thing of all is Prince, and I never played that song onstage together," she said in an interview with The New York Times Style Magazine.

"And that breaks my heart. I guess we all think we are immortal — I always thought we had plenty of time. I should have told Prince 10 years ago or 15 years ago, 'Hey, Prince, we should do this song onstage together — some night, some city, call me.'"

Prince died on April 21, 2016, aged 57, putting an end to any possible future collaboration between the pair. However, Nicks once claimed she still shares a relationship with the icon even beyond the grave.

In an interview in 2019, the singer admitted that she speaks to Prince when nervous about stepping on the stage.

"I feel like Prince is with me," she said as per iHeart Website. "When I am nervous, I'll talk to Prince. In my solo act, when I do 'Moonlight,' I wear this white wolfy coat — I put this coat on, and I try to transform into a Dire Wolf from Game of Thrones. And before I go on, I always say, 'Walk with me, Prince.'"

Nicks is a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and is the first female to achieve this feat.

Nicks and Prince shared similar interests, including their love for wearing black chiffon around the house. However, their music brought about their friendship. Nicks sampled Prince's "Little Red Corvette" for her song "Stand Back" and called him into the studio to have a piece of it.

"I called him and said, 'Can you come to the studio and listen to this song? I've sung over your song and written another song, and you may hate it, and if you do, I won't do it,'" she revealed to Rolling Stone. "He came over to Sunset Sound, and he loved it — he played piano and guitar on it."

Eventually, they formed a friendship devoid of romance but impactful. Prince, at some point, tried influencing Nicks to add more sexually explicit lyrics to her songs, to which Nicks rejected the idea.
