If there’s one person who didn’t love the idea of Adele releasing her new album during the holidays it’s Mariah Carey. The Queen of Christmas, usually dominates the charts during this time of year. This year though there’s another queen in town, and she’s not necessarily singing Christmas jingles!
Mariah still dominates the holiday meme market at least. So much so even, that many people have started to forget about another holiday sensation that is probably also not happy that Adele picked the end of the year to release a new album. Michael Bublé has also been surging up the charts in the last few weeks. This year, though, he has had to contend with his main rival Mariah, Adele, and even a hip-hop artist! These are the current streaming numbers heading into the home stretch at the end of the year.
Adele Is Topping The Albums Charts … Shocking Right?
As expected Adele’s “30” is spending its fifth straight week on top of the most sold/downloaded albums. By the way, album sale numbers are a major science these days. Obviously, back in the day the list of the top-selling albums only had to contemplate literal album sales.
Today the people who keep track of the lists apply this formula: “1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale” to calculate album sales.
Adele’s “30” earned 212,000 units with the formula. Plus, the full album actually racked up 180,500 copies sold over the last week. Proving that there are a lot of people that still do things the old-school way. To the surprise of many Roddy Ricch decided to drop his second album at the end of the year.
A date that is typically not one that hip-hop artists gush over. However, Rich is doing well for himself coming in fourth in album sales.
Mariah Carey Still Tops The Singles List
Although Adele is stealing a lot of Mariah’s thunder this year the “Queen of Christmas” has still found a way to top the singles list with, “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. This marks the fourth year that the song tops the Billboard top 100 at the end of the year. Other holiday-related songs have also surged up the charts.
Even some very, very classic singles. The Ronettes’ 1963 “Sleigh Ride” for example made it all the way to number 10 on the single’s list. Some people are getting very traditional over the holiday season. That actually could hurt the album sales for some top stars’ recent releases.
Taylor Swift Maybe One Of The Biggest Letdowns Of The Holidays
Taylor Swift may be another star that has suffered the misfortune of having released an album in very close proximity to Adele’s “30”. That could certainly hurt her numbers in the long run. Taylor’s Red (Taylor’s Version) came in at number 3 on the list. With its 76,000 album-equivalent units.
A very respectable number by most people’s standards for sure. Unfortunately for Taylor, her highly anticipated release won’t be setting any records. She can certainly blame Adele for that. Who knows maybe this will be Adele in one of her songs for her next album!
