Is Labelle Currently Married?

LaBelle is currently unmarried, but that does not mean she hasn't walked down the aisle before. The singer was in several engagements previously but only tied the knot once. Her first engagement was to Otis Williams from "The Temptations." The duo was engaged for a year but broke up because Williams wanted LaBelle to give up on her music career and move with him to Detroit.

A few years later, the music legend kicked off a relationship with a former school teacher turned manager named Armstead Edwards. Via the Huffington Post, LaBelle revealed that she was the one who popped the big question. Edwards had asked her to marry him three times previously, but the 77-year-old turned him down.

Labelle And Edwards Are Divorced

After more than three decades of being married, LaBelle and her husband split amicably in 2000 and finalized their divorce three years later. Despite almost two decades of their separation, their relationship and habit of looking out for each other make one wonder why they separated.

The iconic singer didn't withhold the information and revealed on "Oprah's Master Class" that the split was because they decided they couldn't live together. This didn't come as a result of any physical or mental altercations; the two just resolved to care for each other from afar. She also revealed that she couldn't cope with "anybody for 32 straight years" because of her personality.

Via OprahMag, LaBelle explained, "We were together for 32 years, and we realized that we couldn't live together anymore. We never fought in 32 years, thank God. We even got along when we didn't get along. But then we realized we had to leave each other."

They Had Three Children

Despite the divorce, the couple has remained close with seemingly no animosity between them. LaBelle even admitted that Edwards is still one of her best friends. The couple lived two minutes from each other and had no problem co-parenting after finalizing their divorce in 2003.

Four years after they got married, the two welcomed their first child, Zuri Stocker Edwards.

The "Lady Marmalade" artist and her husband adopted four more children, with Zuri being the only biological child and William, Stayce, Dodd, and Stanley as the adopted children. The 77-year-old is also the proud grandmother of several grandkids, which she often shows off on her Instagram page.

Labelle Is Looking For A Husband, Not A Boyfriend

Since her split from Edwards, LaBelle has reportedly kept herself open to love. In 2016, it was confirmed that the soul legend had started seeing drummer Eric Seats. Seats is 30 years her junior and a year younger than Zuri. The two were together for two years before it was made public.

They met after LaBelle hired Seats to be her drummer a while back. The 47-year-old moved into LaBelle's Philadelphia home from Los Angeles. A source revealed that "She tried to keep it quiet, but everyone around her has figured things out now. She's completely smitten with him, and they spend so much time together."

Shortly after, the couple called it quits, and LaBelle told The New York Post, "I don't want a boyfriend. I want a husband … I have a wonderful life. My life is so good that a lot of men admire me, and they try to look at me like that, and I say, 'Bye Felicia, Bye.'"

The singer also told Page Six that she wasn't actively looking for her next partner, so she would wait till the moment felt right. "It's going to fall when it falls, you know? I'll know when it's right. I never look, never look, you know, let it fall, right?"
