The departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the British Royal family has been one filled with controversy and plenty of theories quite literally since the news broke. After spending years abiding by the strict code of ethics imposed by the monarchy, concerns are allegedly arising in Buckingham Palace over what the former Royals will say and do now that they no longer hold these obligations. The Duke and Duchess are in an unprecedented situation, and one royal commentator feels as though it could land them in some hot water if they aren’t mindful.
Now the couple are living fairly quietly in Los Angeles with their son Archie, but despite the apparent freedoms they may be enjoying, Royal commentator Katie Nicholl said that the family is actually undergoing a one year trial run after which they will reevaluate with the Queen if they want to retain the permanence of their departure from the monarchy, meaning that they are and will continue to be supervised in some way by Buckingham Palace until that final decision is made.
“I think it’s the case of the Palace watching and waiting to see what they’ll do. And they will be watching, and they’ll be watching very closely,” Nicholl said of the young former Royal’s unique situation. “There is a sense of trepidation about the couple going at making a business alone.”
“We are seeing Harry and Meghan do something that hasn’t actually been done,” she said of the sheer unprecedented nature of their decision and the potential recourse it may hold for the family as a whole.
“They are testing the water and anything that smacks of cashing in on their royal connections or over-commercialization is going to meet a very prickly response from the Palace,” Nicholl continued to mention of their “trial” departure from their Royal duties.
Beyond the mixed bag of emotions concerning them propagating their Royal fame, the couple is focused very hard on individual independence, “Meghan and Harry are thinking very hard about what they want to do, how they are going to make money.”
Their mainstay plan for financial success is a bevy of public speaking engagements, with the couple reportedly bringing in roughly $1 million per appearance.
“Public speaking is absolutely going to be one of the key ways for them to make money but I think they are going to be very careful about what they speak publicly about. It’s certainly not going to be about life behind palace walls,” Nicholl said of the particular care the couple will have to take while engaging in those speaking events.
