Ridley Scott Fires Back At Gucci Family Over 'House of Gucci' Criticism

Director Ridley Scott has been busier defending his movie House of Gucci than he potentially was making it. The famed director famously blamed millennials for another film he was involved in, Matt Damon's "The Last Duel" bombing at the box office. In that instance, he mentioned that this generation did not want to see anything that was presented to them through a phone. The 84-year-old director has proven that he still has a lot of fight left in him. Now, defending his film House of Gucci from the heavy criticism that the movie has received from the members of the Gucci family. One of the biggest issues that the family brought up was the casting of Al Pacino, of all things. Ridley isn't having it!
The Gucci Family Doesn't Love The Portrayal Of Aldo Gucci In The Film
As we reported on Monday, and have recently also referenced in the previous paragraph one of the biggest issues that the Gucci family has had with the film has been Al Pacino's portrayal of Aldo Gucci. In Monday's statement the Gucci family mentioned that they didn't approve of the way that the family were portrayed as thugs and virtually mobsters in the movie. Arguing that this particular portrayal could hurt their brand quite a bit. In the statement to Variety the family mentioned,
"The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci — president of the company for 30 years [played by Al Pacino in the film] — and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them,"
Ridley Scott Is Defending The Movie Against The Critics
So far Ridley Scott has yet to blame millennials for the suboptimal reviews that the movie is getting. What he did defend was the casting decisions and the way that the family was being portrayed in the film. Aldo Gucci's daughter, Patrizia Gucci called Pacino, fat, short and with sideburns, as well as mentioning that he looked really ugly in character. He did not represent the real Aldo Gucci who by Patrizia's standards was a real handsome man. Ridley Scott on the other hand acknowledged that most of the pushback that he'd been receiving from the Gucci family centered around Pacino's character Aldo. He defended Al Pacino saying,
"Frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world, you should be so f------ lucky."
The Controversies May Be Helping Ridley Scott's Film
For weeks now House of Gucci has been a major talking point in the news cycle for the entertainment business. Despite the fact that the Gucci family isn't exactly pleased with the way that they are portrayed in the film, and that Lady Gaga's accent has been heavily criticized the film has manged to muster up a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 7/10 from IMDb, and 59% rating from Metacritic. The fandom is split down the middle. Which is usually not the worse thing in the world for these types of movies at the box office.
