The movie industry in the United States is one sector that the country's citizens are well invested in. Some even go as far as picking role models from celebrities due to like-mindedness or genuine affection.
Apart from the industry's positive influence on people, some discussions have become hot topics intermittently on social media; one is gender pay inequality.
Different movie stars have different perceptions about pay inequality, and some are always vocal about the discussion than others. Jennifer Lawrence, an American actress, made some comments about it recently.
She discovered that she was paid less than her co-male actors, who starred in the same movie as her. Many movie stars took her side, but Kate Winslet had a different opinion about the discussion. Keep scrolling to see what she said.
Winslet Disapproves Open Gender Pay Inequality Discussions
Winslet is a British actress who is often regarded as one of the most prominent actresses of her time. She does not believe that it is proper for movie stars to address issues centered on gender pay inequality publicly.
She doesn't like talking about her finances in public, so she feels uncomfortable when her colleagues publicly address related issues. In a recent interview, she opened up about the issue. Winslet believes that her opinion can be attributed to her nationality; she feels it is British to keep your financial life as private as possible. Winslet does not have anything against the conversation but the mode of address.
Lawrence openly condemned the pay inequality, but Winslet is not happy with the level of transparency that other actors show. She later admitted that she might be lucky not to have related issues in the industry.
However, Winslet believes that the best approach for anyone in that situation is to excuse themselves to feel comfortable. However, Winslet's colleague, Lawrence, had no problems discussing it in public.
Lawrence Advocated Equal Pay For Both Genders
Lawrence once expressed her feelings about unequal pay in the movie industry. She noticed that most female actors were paid less than their male counterparts even on the same project.
People have addressed it at some point in the past, but Lawrence recently voiced it after she experienced such an act in a movie she starred in. A Sony hack scandal sparked her reaction, and she couldn't bottle her feelings inside her.
There were emails between Sony employees, actors, and executives illegally released into the public in the hack. Also, there were statements about how much certain actors got paid for starring in some projects.
Incidentally, Lawrence saw that she was paid significantly lesser than some male actors that starred in David O. Russel's movie, "American Hustle." After seeing this, she was compelled to express her feelings to the media.
Lawrence's Reaction After Seeing The Sony Hack
Lawrence expressed her feelings through a letter that opened up about what she saw on the Sony hack mail. She said that when she knew about the gender unequal pay, she was angry with herself instead of getting mad at Sony.
She was mad at herself because she intentionally didn't ask for extra pay not to sound spoiled or greedy. She didn't want her colleagues to have a weird perception of her.
At the same time, she was at a crossroads in expressing her opinions and not offending the other gender. She saw no reason why her male counterparts in the same movie were paid better.
Many actors, including Jeremy Renner and Bradley Cooper, supported Lawrence's comments and opinions when the issue became public. John Hutcherson, a co-star on "Hunger Games," also sided with her.
Winslet Clarified Her Comments After Internet Backlash
Some news outlets confirmed that Winslet received backlash from people for her comments about inequality. The actress knew she was misunderstood and decided to clear the air about her comments.
Winslet said that discussions about pay in Hollywood is one topic she had a hard time talking about. She doesn't always want to be questioned about anything because she doesn't like talking about it in public.
She admitted that both male and female actors should be paid the same amount, especially when featured on the same project. She only just felt it was weird to address such topics publicly on the internet or during interviews.
She then made it clear that she was on Lawrence's side the whole time because she supported the motion of equal pay for males and females both in Hollywood and other industries.
