Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer announced she was writing a book last year. With an impending release date, May 5th, excerpts from advanced copies of Hope, Grace, & Faith are revealing a lot about Messer’s personal life and upbringing.
Messer, who is now 27, is opening up about some inappropriate things she says happened in her childhood and adolescence. It turns out that there is a lot Teen Mom 2 viewers have not seen play out on MTV, and some of it is heartbreaking.
The biggest reveal so far? Messer claims that her mother, Dawn Spears, pressured her into having sex with a virtual stranger. She claims that Spears, a young mother herself, would hang out with Messer and her friends when her husband went out of town. Messer was a young teenager when she says her mother suggested they play ‘spin the bottle’ and then shoved Leah into a room with a random teen. Messer says she felt pressured into having sex with this boy.
Messer also reveals that she lost her virginity at the age of 13, before this incident occurred. It was not long before she would appear on 16 & Pregnant, pregnant with twins.
When Messer describes the incident, she goes into detail. Spears moved the bottle after the random teenager spun it so that it pointed to Messer. She allegedly pushed Messer and the boy into a room and held the door shut. Messer claims she had no desire to have sex with the boy, but she felt as if she had no other choice. The book also describes the immense shame Messer felt when she left the room, not yet knowing how to say no.
She also goes on to describe other ways in which her mother embarrassed her around friends. Spears would often want to hang out with the teenagers, and Messer writes, “I think because she never went to high school, or even got to be a normal teenager, there was a part of her that felt like she had missed out on something.” Messer says that her mother had a very sheltered life before she met Messer’s father, and she was also struggling with mental illness.
In July of 2019, Spears appeared on a podcast to discuss her relationship with Messer and other family members. She describes going through some difficult times and having to apologize to her husband and children for some of her actions. She also describes not feeling angry about Messer writing a book.
Messer’s book will be released in a matter of weeks, but many Teen Mom 2 viewers are already pre-ordering it on Amazon. They are excited to see what else Messer gets real about.
