Kanye West has declared that his drinking days are done. His partying paper trail is a bit hard to follow due to his intermittent digital footprint – sure, a quick Google search will provide a pistol’s worth of photographic ammo, but his non-usage of Instagram and most other social media channels have kept any CÎROC-spiked selfies secretive.
Individual intoxicants aside – and although West did prefer vodka at one time – the “Jesus Walks” GRAMMY-winner said Wednesday that he has walked away from his previous preferences.
West’s finding of faith has been anything but private. No matter what one’s personal beliefs might be, it’s hard not to believe the complete “180” he’s made – especially considering this is the same man who wrote a song called “I Am a God” as recently as 2013.
“I made that song because I am a god. I don’t think there’s much more explanation.” He told W at the time. “I am a god. Now what?”
The self-decided deity definitely proved he wasn’t a prophet when he didn’t see this one coming.
Ye’s shtick became so popular that a zealous follower produced the Book of Yeezus: a reproduction of the Bible’s book of Genesis which replaced every mention of “God” with that of “Kanye West.” A misinformed post went viral after its 2014 release, claiming that the text was published by West himself.
The now-“Jesus Is King” artist made no attempt to clarify he was uninvolved.
Six years later, after publicly declaring his conversion to Christianity in late 2019 at a college crowd listening session, the rapper revealed how he put a cork in his Dom Pér-alayzing past.
“One day,” West told GQ, “I was in my office working on the couture collection, and there was some Grey Goose in the fridge and I was just going to get a daytime drink, and I looked and thought, ‘Devil, you’re not going to beat me today.’
That one statement is like a tattoo. I haven’t had a drink since I realized I needed to take it day by day, but I never owned up, or was even told, ‘Hey, you’re a functioning alcoholic.’”
West recounted being called every name in the book – “but not a functioning alcoholic.”
“And I would be drinking orange juice and Grey Goose in the morning,” he added.
But of course, the topic had to touch on “that” night VMAs – and yes, it’s probably the one you’re thinking of. Prior to the Hennessy-happenings (which resulted in a stage-storming), West had no public history with alcohol.
“I really grabbed the drink to be able to even go to the awards show due to the information that everyone knows now. To say, ‘Okay, I can handle this.’”
More power to Ye!
