Addison Rae’s TikTok Ban: The Funny Story Behind It

If you're on TikTok, then the name Addison Rae is one you're familiar with. This Louisiana-native rose to stardom after her TikTok account became viral and gained a ridiculous amount of followers in 2019. She joined the Hype House, a collaborative group that got her even more followers running in millions.

Rae expanded her career since then, going into music with her debut single "Obsessed," which was released in March 2021. She also starred in "He's All That," a Netflix rom-com that premiered in August and landed several partnerships with big brands like L'Oreal, Reebok, American Eagle, and Hollister.

Sadly, Rae's account was suspended by TikTok a few weeks ago "for no reason." She soon resumed activities on the app and talked about the experience and the funny story behind it.

Rae is currently the third most-followed account on TikTok, behind Charlie D'Amelio and Khaby Lame. This 20-year-old has certainly managed her TikTok fame into that of an actual celebrity much better than most have done.

Rae has managed to star in Netflix's "He's All That," appeared on "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," release her music and become the face of TikTok stardom. She went from posting dance and lip-sync videos on TikTok just for fun to becoming one of the app's most popular stars.

Her TikTok presence dates as far back as mid-2019, and her videos began to take off when she hit one million followers in October 2019. She dropped out of Louisiana State University, where she studied broadcast journalism and went into content creation full time.

She told Insider in April 2020 that "I remember that's when it changed for me," Rae said. "I knew I wanted to take it more seriously and expand it to other platforms. I uploaded a video to YouTube and got really active on Instagram." From there, the ball just continued to roll.

Rae announced the news of her ban to her millions of followers on Thursday when she tweeted a screenshot of the message from TikTok, which said, "Your account was permanently banned due to multiple violations of our Community Guidelines."

The TikTok personality who rose to fame with her dance videos tried to make light of the ban, saying, "Well, time to get a job." Rae didn't say why she was suspended, but internet detectives pointed out that it might be because she posted a video where she turned the camera to her clothed bottom.

However, by Friday morning, her account was up and rearing to go. A representative from TikTok told Page Six, "Addison's account is up and running as normal. Her account was briefly down last night then restored within the hour."

With the crisis averted, Rae showed she could joke about the event on her appearance on the "Reign With Josh Smith" podcast. Here, she spoke about the story that made the ban so funny.

She said, "I was talking to my friends and my team, and I was like, 'Sometimes social media is so toxic. Ugh, I wish it would just go back to the way it was when you would just post to share and whatever."

Not long after, Rae was scrolling through the platform, and a notification popped up to tell her her account was banned from the app. Rae joked that "The universe was like, 'Please stop talking bad about social media.'" According to Rae, the TikTok ban was "for no reason" and "it was just random."

Rae has been very busy the past year expanding her brand beyond the walls of TikTok, so if the ban had been permanent, it's safe to say she would have been okay.

Her followers aren't only a lot on TikTok; she has millions of active followers on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

She has also generated multiple income streams with her single "Obsessed" and "He's All That," the Netflix film she starred in. Rae mentioned that although she started out as a social media personality, acting and singing have always been a dream of hers.

In an interview with Elle, she said, "In this industry, when you come in and get labeled as one thing… people like to keep you there," she admitted. "Which is understandable, and I get it, but what people don't realize is I've always wanted to do acting, I've always wanted to do music. I've always wanted to do all these other things that they didn't really get to see or know because I just started being known when I was 19 years old."
