No stranger to controversy a Charles Barkley quote once again made headlines. This is not uncharted territory for Chuck. To be honest, how things played out in the context of what was being said, the first thing that comes to mind is that social media may have overreacted. Then again that is what social media does.

To try and put things in the right context so that you can decide whether or not Chuck's comments can actually be considered controversial.

The NBA all-star weekend is getting ready to kick off in Chicago. It is going to be a hectic 3 days for the NBA. Without question, the most-watched NBA show is NBA on TNT. The crew holds a show before and after the main games during certain days of the long season.

The stars of the show, Ernie Johnson, Shaq, Kenny, and Barkley are faces of the league just as much as current players are. So they are making the rounds doing interviews before the events get started.

The Interview

So, the crew was interviewed for Today, one of the most popular daily shows in network television. Of course, the topic of Kobe's death came up. Pretty much everyone in the crew had something to say on the matter. Then they are asked about the issue with Snoop Dogg and Gayle King.

This is where the controversial comments are made. Charles said, “We’re not making Kobe out to be no hero. We’re celebrating his basketball excellence. We understand what happened in Colorado. That’s fair, but two things can be true. Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest basketball players ever. And he had a flaw that we all know about.”

The Social Media Fallout

As expected people on social media had an opinion on Barkley's opinion. As was the case with Gayle King the opinions were basically divided right down the middle. There where people that are just not comfortable with the fact that the skeleton's in Kobe's closet are literally being brought back in the wake of a tragedy.

There are arguments to be made in that light, where it seems fair that this is not the most appropriate thing to talk about. At this particular point in time.

Should This Be Overblown?

Time and time again it seems that Chuck makes certain comments so that he will stay in the news. That is not something new or something that other celebrities don't do. Even if they are never going to admit to it.

Having said this, it does not seem that this is the case for Barkley in this situation. At the end of the day though, you be the judge if you want. All that can be said is that Chuck is going to be Chuck.
