It’s been a crazy few weeks for Jessica Simpson. Just this week, her memoir Open Book was released, but Jessica has been on the promotion circuit for weeks not. She’s dropped plenty of bombshells along the way — and nothing has been off limits. From her marriage and eventual divorce from Nick Lachey, to a kiss she shared with Justin Timberlake, to her dating history with John Mayer, Jessica is proving that she really is an open book and holding nothing back.
One of the biggest bombshells, however, came from Jessica’s admission that she had an “emotional affair” with Johnny Knoxville while she was married to Nick Lachey. Jessica and Johnny met on the set of the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard remake, and she expressed how she felt truly comfortable with him. “I could share my deepest authentic thoughts with him, and he didn’t roll his eyes at me. He actually liked that I was smart and embraced my vulnerabilities,” Jessica shared. “He believed in me and made me feel I could do anything.”
Of course, this revelation comes as a bit of a scandal as Jessica was married to Nick Lachey at the time. The two were married from 2002-2006, but Jessica details her emotional affair as happening towards the end of her marriage to Nick. Jessica herself admits that she felt her emotional affair was a “betrayal” to her marriage, because though she didn’t do anything physical with Johnny — it felt like their emotional connection was deeper than any sort of physical one may have been.
“First off, we were both married, so this wasn’t going to get physical,” Jessica describes in her book. “But to me, an emotional affair was worse than a physical one. It’s funny, I know, because I had placed such an emphasis on sex by not having it before marriage. After I actually had sex, I understood that the emotional part was what mattered. Johnny and I had that, which seemed far more of a betrayal to my marriage than sex.” Jessica also describes how she did not feel this connection with Nick, which is why it felt like such a betrayal to her marriage.
Jessica and Nick have been divorced for more than 10 years now and seem to harbor no bad blood. Of course, there has been great discussion about both of them in the past few weeks because of Jessica’s book, which Nick specified that he hasn’t read. As for Jessica, she continues to bear all and discuss previously private details about her other relationships, too. From kissing Justin Timberlake to her tumultuous on and off relationship with John Mayer, everything can be read in her memoir, Open Book, which is available now.
