Do You Know These Interesting Facts About Lorde?
By Favour Adegoke on October 23, 2021 at 4:45 AM EDT
Lorde took the world by storm. All it took was one song — "Royals" — to rocket her out of the suburbs of New Zealand to global superstardom in 2013.
Yet, she had far more than that one tune-up on her sleeve, as she quickly proved with the release of her amazing full-length debut, "Pure Heroine," which was filled with track after track of some of the most exciting and compelling pop music anyone had heard in a long time.
The fact that she was just 16 at the time just made everything all that more amazing. Lorde is now 24 and will be on the road supporting her deservedly acclaimed newest album, "Solar Power," which came out early this year.
Beginning in February 2022, the tour will play over 50 concerts in Australasia, North America, and Europe. It will kick off on February 26 in New Zealand and land in North America on April 3 in Nashville. Her final U.S. date will be May 7, 2022, in Santa Barbara.
The songwriter recently unveiled a cheeky photo of her leaping over a camera on her website to promote the album. She also confirmed that she'd reunited with "Royals" director Joel Kefali for the "Solar Power" video, which featured her in a yellow skirt and top, dancing in the sand as she sang an ode to the warmer months.
In honor of her new album, here's a recap of some career highlights and other interesting facts about the fascinating star.
What Is Lorde's Real Name?
Lorde's real name is actually Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, and it's a pretty unique mouthful! She decided to take on a stage name after signing onto a development deal with Universal Music Group when she was just 12.
The singer chose the name Lorde because she had been fascinated with nobility and royalty for years, adding the 'e' to make it more feminine than the classic title "Lord."
"It was actually a really quick decision. It's quite funny, because I'm like, wow, if I'd known I would be having that name for the rest of my life I probably would have spent more than two days on it," she told 60 Minutes of the decision in 2017.
"It was a good spontaneous choice, I think. I'm quite proud of my 16-year-old self for not messing that one up because if I'd given myself a cool, weird, hip name that I hated now that would be super annoying."
Lorde Was Once Caught In A Political Scandal
When she did a world tour to promote "Melodrama," Lorde found herself caught up in political controversy. At the end of 2017, she scheduled a concert in Tel Aviv. Still, pro-Palestinian activists urged her to cancel the performance. This demand was part of a larger effort to use boycotts to pressure Israel in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Lorde did eventually cancel that tour performance, but that decision brought forward a new round of criticism—this time from pro-Israel groups calling the singer "anti-Semitic."
For her part, Lorde's statement about the cancellation appeared to walk a line without directly taking sides. She announced the cancellation on Twitter and added that she "had done a lot of reading and sought a lot of opinions" before making her decision.
She ended with an apparent call for peace, saying, "I hope we can all dance one day."
The production company, which was to produce Lorde's show, also put out a statement. "We are regrettably forced to announce Lorde's upcoming June performance in Israel is canceled. Payment for the tickets, for those who have already purchased them, will be refunded within 14 business days."
What Does She Always Take On Her Tours?
For most musicians, going on tours can be exhausting physically, emotionally, and mentally.
However, to reduce the stress and challenges, musicians take some items with them. For Lorde, her comfort at bedtimes and naps is of utmost importance.
In a question and answer session with Vogue, Lorde answered "expensive sheets" as the most surprising thing fans will hear she brings on tour with her.
Additional answers include the Apollo Theater in Harlem as her favorite place to perform in New York and lighting candles and "setting an intention" as her ritual before a big performance.
Lorde's Personal Life
During the production of "Solar Power," rumors started swirling that Lorde and her producer, the famed Jack Antonoff, were secretly together. Now that the album is out, how well do those rumors hold?
Despite the rumors of her dating Antonoff, Lorde has reportedly been with music executive Justin Warren. He has been spotted around New Zealand with Lorde since early as 2016, though the pair have continuously denied that they're an item.
"Ella and I have worked together for years and we're good friends. Any rumors of us being 'a pair' are ridiculous," Justin told the NZ Herald in early 2016. "Ella has a really busy year ahead of her and we'll be spending more time together as plans for the next Lorde record unfold."
That being said, they've continued to be spotted together, and in 2019, Lorde stepped out with a ring on that finger, which raised many eyebrows. But despite being a chart-topping star, Lorde keeps the details of her personal life very private.
While Lorde has not publicly commented on her relationship status, it's assumed she and Justin, who is 17 years her senior, are allegedly still together.
