Actor Sean Penn's wife, Leila George, has filed for divorce just one year after the couple married.
According to legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Penn's wife Leila George D'Onofrio filed for dissolution of marriage in Los Angeles County Courts. It's unclear what ended the couple's relationship, but the 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' star married the Australian actress on July 2020, who is the daughter of actor, Vincent D'Onofrio.
According to reports, the 60-year-old Oscar winner married the 28-year-old in an intimate ceremony with minimal loved ones in attendance. The former couple had been linked since 2016, and have been on and off since that time. At the time, Penn claimed he had a "Covid" wedding telling Seth Meyers, "We did a COVID wedding, by that I mean it was a county commissioner on Zoom, we were at the house, my two children and her brother, and we did it that way."
A friend of the couple recently shared details of their relationship, telling People, "Leila has been in Sean’s life for a while. They got together and then they broke up, and Sean won her back." Adding, "He realized he had made a mistake and when he felt he might lose her, he worked hard to get her back."
The continued, "They got back together during COVID and became really close and got engaged a few months ago, early during quarantine." Back in March, the couple made a rare appearance together at a fundraiser the actress produced for wildlife relief in Australia following the massive bushfires. At the time, the couple seemed to be happy, with George telling reporters it is the most important thing to have his support for the charity. "I wouldn't be here smiling if it wasn't for him," she said.
As you know, Sean Penn has been in several high-profile relationships including his first wife Robin Wright-Penn and Charlize Theron. He was also married to Madonna from 1985 to 1989. The actor shares two children with Wright, Dylan, and Hopper.
So far, Sean Penn has not responded to the divorce.
