UFC star Chuck Liddell is breaking his silence on his domestic violence arrest, claiming he was NOT the aggressor during the incident, and his wife had mental health issues.

According to a statement, posted on Liddell's social media, the fighter claims he was the victim during the incident and says he only went to jail after taking his wife's place. In other words, she was going to go to jail, and he decided to go in her place so she could stay with their child at home.

"Last night the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies who responded were professional. While the information about this case will be revealed in due course, I believe it is important to convey and clarify a few facts about the situation," he began.

Chuck continued, "I was the victim of the incident last night at our family home, as details of the case will reveal. The deputies informed me that my wife would be arrested, as I did not respond to her assault while I sustained bruising and lacerations. I volunteered to go in her place."

Adding, "This was one of many times I have tried to shield a family mental health issue from the public purview. It has become painfully apparent that this cannot continue, as our private life has now reached a public breaking point. Please respect our privacy as I help to navigate our family through this difficult time."

As we reported, the UFC fighter was arrested after an argument turned physical inside his Hidden Hills home. The couple reportedly returned home from a party, and an argument ensued. At some point, it turned physical and the police were called to their home.

Following an investigation, it was determined Chuck's wife -- Heidi -- would be cited on the scene for the incident. Part of the reason for this is that officers couldn't determine who the aggressor was during the incident, so they were going to arrest both of them. At that point, Liddell claims he decided to go with officers to turn himself in and go in the place of his wife. It should be noted, in most cases like this, they separate the couple from each other anyways.

It's unclear if Chuck and Heidi are splitting up, or if this is just a bump in the road. It appears, based on his statement, that the couple has endured issues similar to this in the past.

The UFC star was booked on $20,000 bail and released early the next morning. The fighter was photographed leaving the police station, and although he didn't speak to reporters, he gave a fist pump to the crowd.
