End Of An Era: Henry Cavill Prepares to Leave His Role as DC's Superman

Eight decades ago, writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster created the superman character for DC comics, a flagship unit of DC entertainment. Fast forward to the 21st century, the last son of krypton can be seen in other media like novels, movies, and series.

The franchise has had many actors play as the re-incarnate of the classic archetype of superheroism. Currently, gorgeous-looking Henry Cavill holds the helm of affairs after almost a decade. The British actor has portrayed Superman in different features across the DC universe, and fans love his acting.

However, recent rumors that swirled on social media implied that Cavill might not reprise the role again. As per reports, “Cavill's future as Superman in the DC Extended Universe is cloudy.”

If those rumors are true, fans must say goodbye to Cavill donning the red and blue costume again.

Although Cavill’s muscular and facial makeup gave him fawning adoration from fans, he backed it up with sterling performances in his role as Clark Kent alter ego.

His first stint in the role was back in 2013 for “Man of Steel.” The film followed Superman’s life, starting with his arrival from the extinct krypton through his teenage years and then adulthood. It ultimately showcased how the dual personification of Kal-el and Kent reacted when other survivors of his home planet invaded planet Earth.

In 2016, the British actor came back again for a second stint in the role. His character had already achieved recognition as the Earth's strongest man following his battle with his kinsmen.

Although he had saved the Earth, the destruction he left in his wake was devastating. Gotham’s vigilante, Batman decided to take matters into his own hands to ensure Superman's activities were curtailed.

Eventually, the two trashed it out in a battle, with Kal-el showing much restraint throughout the fight. Batman took advantage of this and weakened him with Kryptonite. Ultimately, he died at the end of the film.

His death would only be for a short while as he was resurrected in 2017’s “Justice League.” He joined Earth’s greatest heroes to battle against a new enemy, Zod, whose nefarious plans threatened the planet.

Post “Justice League,” many fans began to clamor for a sequel to “Man of Steel.” Although DC owners, Warner Brothers, did not disclose if there might be a sequel, reports have shown that they wanted Cavill in a cameo in the 2019 film “Shazam.”

However, negotiations between studio heads and Cavill’s representatives ended as a futile endeavor. Speculations implied that the disagreement was based on scheduling conflicts for Cavill and his other commitments.

Interestingly, Cavill was reportedly not engaged to other movie ventures at that time. This kick-started rumors that his Superman role was tailing to an end.

This speculation was further intensified when an insider alleged that the studio heads were steering the ship of the DC universe in a different direction. Many have assumed that this was the trigger that prompted Cavill’s switch to Netflix's paranormal fantasy series, “The Witcher.”

In the Netflix series “The Witcher,” Cavill played the part of Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, as he explored formative events that shaped his destiny.

The first season consisted of eight episodes and was released on the streaming network on December 20, 2019.

It was set on the backdrop of a fictional place known as “the Continent,” with the entirety of the series based on medieval scenes and acts.

He and his co-stars thrilled fans with their outstanding performances as they played their individual roles in the series. The series was a smashing success and earned critical acclaim among viewers and critics.

This further boosted Cavill’s international recognition, adding to the fame he got from acting in the superman franchise, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E,” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

The premiere of the second season is scheduled for late December 17,2021.

Whether or not Cavill hangs the super cape, he has already proved his versatility to fans at large.

Before the release of Synder’s cut of the “Justice League,” the actor had featured in another Netflix film, “Enola Holmes,” as Sherlock Holmes, investigator, extraordinaire, and estranged brother to Enola.

Although Enola was the lead character, Cavill also performed amazingly in his role as Holmes.

The film received positive reviews amid the grim moments that came with the pandemic. Netflix recently announced that a sequel is also in the works.

Fans can also hope to see Cavill in a future adaptation of the science fiction media franchise “Mass Effect.”
