Jesy Nelson is coming up on the one-year anniversary of her disbanding from British girl group, Little Mix.

Citing mental health reasons, Jesy left the band in December 2020 and embarked on a solo career.

This Friday, October 8, the British songstress will drop her debut solo-single, “Boyz,” featuring Nicki Minaj.

In preparation for the big debut, Jesy is making the press rounds and stopped by Glamour to talk all things ‘Jesy.’

On thing's for sure, Jesy is a new and improved woman.

Since embarking on her solo journey, the pop singer has found a new sense of self and tells the outlet, “I’m hand-on-heart happy for the first time in years. I used to say I was – even up until recently – but not really feel it. Now I’m a 10 out of 10 happy – maybe nine out of 10 some days – but it’s just these past few months that I’ve actually felt it.”

As fans of Little Mix and Jesy know, she suffered major mental health issues and even attempted suicide in 2013 during her time in the girl group.

She even has her own BBC documentary called “Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out,” which detailed her struggled with mental health, body image and the heartbreaking effects of cyberbullying.

To say the documentary was impactful is an understatement.

It’s a new era, and Jesy is better than ever!

“The main reason for that is because I've taken control over my life and I've looked after myself. That’s the most important thing you can do and that's what I've done,” she explained. “I know this feeling is real because my mum sees it, my sister sees it. They’ve got Jesy back, the Jesy who disappeared for a decade and went down a black hole of misery and real mental health problems.”

She explained that the last time she spoke to Glamour, which was in 2019, she never thought she’d feel happy again.

Jesy continued to tell the outlet that she no longer feels the need to alter herself with fillers or corsets that “bruise” her.

These were things Jesy used to hide her pain while in Little Mix.

“I started using makeup and hair to mask who I genuinely was because I got slated for my face and my weight and how I looked,” Jesy revealed. “I did everything I could to not be myself. I tried ridiculous diets to lose weight. I changed my hair all the time. I got lip fillers. I did everything I could to be this girl people would accept.”

While her confidence isn’t 100 just yet, Jesy admits she is slowly getting there.

“I don’t wear corsets, I stopped the lip fillers. I’m still wearing makeup, but nowhere near as much as I used to. My body confidence has improved so much,” the singer said.
