Sarah Jessica Parker Set to Reprise Her Role As One Of The Sanderson Sisters for 'Hocus Pocus 2'

The Sanderson sisters are returning. Yay!

“Hocus Pocus” debuted over two decades ago in 1993. The dark, fantasy film followed the lives of three resurrected Salem witches obsessed about attaining immortality. The major recipe for their cauldron of charms was the souls of children that wandered into their garden. Sarah Sanderson’s lullaby was particularly ironic as she lured unsuspecting kids to their demise.

“Come little children, I'll take thee away / Into a land of enchantment / Come little children, the times come to play / Here in my garden of magic,” she sang.

Even though this sounds grim, the film was infused with a lot of comedy and quirky remarks that made for good Halloween content in that decade.

So, when fans heard of Disney’s plans to bring a sequel to the big screens, warm memories came rushing back for many. Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah Sanderson) alongside Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy are set to reprise their witchy characters once more and we’re here for it.

Here’s an update about Parker as fans wait for the upcoming sequel.

No one could have suspected that the “Sex and the City” star had an ancestor that was allegedly a witch.

A few years ago, Parker was featured in a reality show that tailed celebrities as they uncovered their ancestral roots. The show, titled “Who Do You Think You Are,” saw her trace the tenth generation of her ancestral lineage to Massachusetts.

The trail she followed revealed that one of her great grandmothers was accused of dabbling in witchcraft. More historical local records detailed that Parker’s great gran Esther (Dutch) Elwell of Gloucester was arrested with two other women during the 1690s.

In the records, she and her accomplices allegedly visited a woman named Mary as “ghosts,” and slowly snuffed the life out of her. When Mary died, they were detained for witchcraft based on the report of an anonymous eyewitness.

However, nothing came out of the arrest as the council members ended the blind hunt for people accused of sorcery. Elle lived on to be 82 years old and was buried in the local cemetery. Her case signaled the last witch case in that vicinity.

Despite taking up a starring role in the film, Parker can hardly recall scenes from the set of the film.

During an interview with Stephen Colbert, she divulged, “I don’t have a lot of memories. I mean, I remember the filming of it. I just don’t remember what the movie’s about as much.”

“Three witches, I’ve been told that, and apparently my character’s not very bright. But I fly and sing and I think I like to suck the life … I think I like to kill children? I liked making the movie and I liked flying.”

The “Divorce” actress also revealed that she spent her breaks on set catching up on magazines.

“They’d call cut and maybe they’d go to lunch or change the lens, and I would just stay up there. I realized … I could fit an entire New York Times up the back of the corset,” she said.

“And I found that the harness was comfortable, so I would just sit up there and read the Times while people took their breaks or changed the camera or sometimes went to lunch.”

Even though the Sanderson sisters are returning, Filmmaker Adam Shankman who directed the first installment will not reprise his role as the director of the film.

His unavailability is due to scheduling conflicts with “Disenchanted,” a follow-up to the 2007 fantasy film “Enchanted.” However, he will extend his creative knowledge as an executive producer on the film.

Director Anne Fletcher will take over those duties from him. Fletcher and Shankman's relationship goes as far back as 1990 when they met on the set of Oscars telecast as dancers.

Fletcher later worked with Shankman as his assistant choreographer and have collaborated on tons of projects. Shankman also produced her directorial debut, the 2006 dance film “Step Up” that starred Channing Tatum.

Disney has speculated that the sequel will premiere on Disney+ in 2022. This time, the movie will be centered on three young women who accidentally bring the Sanderson sisters back to modern-day Salem. They must figure out a way to thwart the plans of the child-hungry witches and stop them from going on a killing frenzy.

The new director also had some words to say on the coming sequel. “Now more than ever, people need to laugh,” Fletcher said.

“We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film.”

“I am so grateful to be able to play a part in bringing these witches back to life, and to be working with my friends at Disney again makes it more special. This is a movie for everyone, from the fans who grew up with the first film to the next generation of viewers, and I can’t wait to get started.”

While the sequel is underway, fans can revisit “Hocus Pocus” on Disney+.
