In actor Will Smith’s self-titled new memoir, he details his father’s history of domestic abuse.

The “Men in Black” star remembered how as a child, he watched his father punch his mother – that moment defined him.

At one point in his childhood, Smith decided he would kill his father.

Instead, the actor took care of his cancer-ridden father before he died in 2016.

Smith does recall, though, how his father was always there to celebrate his career wins with him.

His father attended all of Smith’s school games and recitals.

His father abused alcohol, but always showed up sober to the actor’s movie premieres.

Smith’s father also listened to all the music Smith released, and visited the productions the 53-year-old star was a part of.

Smith realizes growing up with his father made his future and the person he is today.
