A 'heartbroken' Will Smith has resigned from the Academy after the disciplinary notice hearing.

He stated: “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.”

He also said, “I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.”

David Rubin, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, issued a statement: "We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith's immediate resignation.”

The academy, meanwhile, has warned that they "may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions” against Will Smith.

Smith's resignation from the Academy simply means that he can no longer enjoy the benefits of being an Academy member.

He can no longer vote for potential nominees, and nor will he have the access to screeners for films in consideration

This does not mean that his invitation to attend future Academy Awards and its related events has been rescinded.

The Academy will take a final decision at their board meeting on April 18th, however, most believe that Smith’s Oscar may not be rescinded by the Academy.
