As you might know, Smith slapped Rock for a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Perry was one of the first stars on the scene to settle the situation.

The “Madea” star clarified that he wasn’t comforting Smith after the slap.

Instead he was only de-escalating the issue.

Perry added that it’s been “difficult” being friends with both Smith and Rock.

He also mentioned that Smith was “devastated” by his out of turn behavior.

“Something happened that was extremely painful for [Will] as well,” Perry recalled.

The filmmaker explained that Smith was triggered by trauma he hadn’t dealt with.
