Disney's live-action remake, "The Little Mermaid," topped the Memorial Day weekend box office with an estimated $117.5 million from the four-day holiday.

The film outdid earlier forecasts that estimated a total of about $110 million for the holiday weekend.

The global opening weekend total stands at about $163.8 million.

The film is a remake of Disney’s classic 1989 animated feature directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, now helmed by Rob Marshall.

The star-studded cast includes Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, and Jacob Tremblay.

Reviews for the film were somewhat mixed, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 67%, but audience approval was high at 95%.

Despite its strong opening, the film's $200 million production budget means a long journey to profitability.

The upcoming weeks will see strong competition from films like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Boogeyman,” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.”

Other films such as "Fast X" and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" had strong showings at the box office, but also face stiff competition.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" also continued its strong performance, now standing at $1.278 billion worldwide.
