Steven Spielberg disclosed that he feels guilty about the negative impact “Jaws” had on sharks.

“I truly and to this day regret the decimation of the shark population because of the book and the film,” he said in an interview.

The filmmaker said that he feared that “sharks are somehow mad at me for the feeding frenzy of crazy sport fishermen” after the film debuted in 1975.

Peter Benchley, the author of the book which inspired the film, has also publicly apologized for the killing frenzy.

Benchley has since advocated for campaigns to preserve sharks from being hunted irately.

“Jaws” has gone on to be a cult classic that pioneered several new concepts in the film industry.

The movie landed numerous awards after its debut, including three Oscars.

Spielberg directed other iconic films like “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park.”

His latest film is a coming-of-age drama titled “The Fabelmans.”
