Opens Up About Her Past Battle with Thyroid Cancer

The star talked about her inspirational journey.

Sofia was one of the stars at the Stand Up to Cancer telethon on August 21. The event was executive produced by Reese Witherspoon and attended by stars like Stevie Wonder & Chris Evans.

“At 28 years old during a doctor’s visit, my doctor felt a lump in my neck,” she explained. “They did a lot of tests and told me finally that I had thyroid cancer.”

Sofia explained how she took charge of the situation. 

“When you’re young and you hear the word ‘cancer’, your mind goes to so many places but I tried not to panic and I decided to get educated.”

She was lucky, as she said doctors were able to detect her cancer early and enter remission. Sofia has been able to stay healthy and wants to ensure others are informed to do the same.

I am here to remind you to get screened,” Sofia urged. “Every year, I get my pap smear, my moles checked, my mammogram, I even from time to time get a colonoscopy.

The Stand up to Cancer event was a success, raising money and awareness with the help of celebs like Ciara, Jennifer Garner, Anthony Anderson, and the org.'s co-founder Katie Couric.
