The NYPD may have been founded in its current form 176 years ago, but it has taken that much time to get its first-ever female police commissioner.

2022 seems to have begun on a positive note for the women in New York, and also for the Black populace, considering Sewell is Black.

Sewell is from Queens and was promoted to chief of detectives last year.

She was with the Nassau Police Department for 23 years, tackling major cases, hostage negotiation, and narcotics.

Her appointment came from Mayor Eric Adams, who was newly sworn in as New York city’s 110th mayor shortly after 12:00 am on January 1, 2022, at Times Square.

Mayor Adams had promised New York a female police commissioner as part of his campaign and has delivered.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted about how honored she was, writing, “I’m privileged to be here and ready to work!”

She also promised New Yorkers, “with fresh eyes & bold ideas, we will become the blueprint for effective and fair public safety.”

Twitter seems to have received the news in a positive manner, wishing the NYPDPC all the best for her future, asking her “to get to work”.
