Licorice Pizza Director Paul Anderson Responds To Controversy 

Licorice Pizza is a coming-of-age comedy-drama released on November 26th, 2021, and has received high ratings.

One issue that sprang up about the film was a scene where a character used a fake Asian accent.

Licorice Pizza is set in 1973 Hollywood and follows two kids as they grow up, chase their dreams, and fall in love.

The film has an ensemble cast that includes Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Maya Rudolph, and others.

Shortly after the film premiered, an Asian American activist group called for a total awards boycott for the film.

They said any awards could send the message that it is okay to mock Asians and that it is dangerous in this COVID-19 era.

Anderson addressed the controversy and said that he wasn’t sure what the problem was with the scene.

The interviewer explained that the character’s racism could permit people to laugh at the Asian stereotype.

Anderson said that it wasn’t his intention to offend and that he was just being honest to the reality of that time period.
