On Thursday, September 8, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at age 96.

Many have taken to social media to mourn the loss of her passing.

She passed away at Balmoral around 1:30 PM Eastern time.

King Charles, 73, released his first statement less than an hour later.

He called her death “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” he added.

He noted that she will not only be mourned by the Commonwealth, but by people around the world.

“I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held,” he concluded.

Queen Elizabeth celebrated her 70th anniversary on the throne earlier this year.
