In January 2019, Jussie Smollett said that two men attacked him in a hate crime.
They allegedly yelled slurs at him and tied a noose around his neck.
However, police found inconsistencies in Smollett’s story.
The two men – brothers – also took the stand to say that Smollett paid them to stage the hate crime.
In December 2021, Smollett was convicted by a jury of 5 out of 6 counts for filing false police reports.
Many experts thought that it was unlikely that Smollett would face prison time.
City officials were asking for $130,000 in overtime police incurred while investigating his case.
The judge ordered a $25,000 fine and over $120,000 to the City of Chicago.
He also ordered that Smollett spend 30 months’ probation and 150 days in jail.
