Jussie Smollett was convicted of staging a hate crime in 2019.

In December 2021, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail.

He also had to pay a $25,000 fine.

Smollett was also ordered to pay $120,000 in restitution to the Chicago Police Department.

On Thursday, his legal team filed their appeal after five deadline extensions.

His legal team cited the principle of “double jeopardy.”

He was initially indicted on sixteen counts but they were all dropped.

They were later revived by a special prosecutor appointed by a judge.

His legal team also took issue with the way Judge Linn handled the trial.
