Hawaii's Mauna Loa, the biggest active volcano in the world, erupted on Monday.

The incident marks the first time it has happened since 1984.

Per reports, the flow of lava is currently restricted to the Northeast Rift Zone of the volcano.

Several agencies also reported that the eruption did not affect the downhill communities

However, communities in the area remain on high alert.

"The #MaunaLoa eruption on #Hawaii Island may create potential air quality hazards across the state,” a tweet from the health department warned.

There has been no call for an evacuation since the incident, although several shelters have been created as a precautionary measure.

Flights within the area are still ongoing, while the situation of the volcano is still being monitored.

Mauna Loa has faced increased seismic activities and multiple earthquakes over the past months.
