There is good news coming from the Oregon Zoo!

A 20-year-old Bornean orangutan named Kitra just gave birth.

Both the mother and the baby are reportedly doing well.

They are staying in a behind-the-scenes maternity den as they bond.

Zoo staffed helped prepare the first-time mom for motherhood.

Zoo volunteers made orangutan “stuffies” for her to practice on.

Staff used them to teach her how to nurse and how to hold a baby.

Orangutan gestation is usually around 8.5 months and babies weigh around 3 pounds when born.

Orangutans are critically endangered due to hunting and deforestation.
